There have been many debates on rather it's a smart idea for DC not to tie in their TV shows like Marvel does. I'm gonna share my thought with my Moviepilot peeps! ^_^
We all know how successful Marvel Studios is right now because of their current universe. EVERYTHING is tied together. Movies and TV alike. All of Marvel's movies, then Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Defenders (I'm not sure if each hero has their own show or all are in one) all fit in one central universe. Some say that's good and bad. A collective universe, you still have a huge fan base. While they are all in the same place, you will have S.H.I.E.L.D. agent fans, superhero fans. And then superhero fans are broken down even more into groups of heroes and then the individuals themselves.
I'm one of those wildcards. I see how each one benefits. I think I'd have to like the central universe a tad bit better though.
As of right now, their movies are unorganized. They need to make a DC branch and choose a guy to run it. That way all things DC will be organized and WB as a whole can work on other movies. I'm not one of those who are proud that DC is getting stomped in that aspect. I love BOTH. My first question after watching Avengers was where was Justice League. Now, we are getting a Justice League oriented cinematic universe with Batman vs Superman. I can't wait!
TV shows aren't tied into a central timeline with these guys however. I am perfectly fine with that.
Arrow started in 2012 and blew minds. DC dominates television. And now we are getting The Flash, Gotham and Constantine (Can someone fill me in on what exactly Constantine is? I can never really find a point blank this is what the show is and who is in it). DC has one movie for their universe. For DC, movies should not dictate the central timeline, if they wanted one. While they have had The Dark Knight Trilogy and other movies, they don't tie into anything. DC should be proud that The Dark Knight is the number one comic book film of all time. If I remember correctly, it was Captain America: The Winter Soldier that holds second place.
If DC had a central universe, it would line up with Arrow I am 100% sure of that. The movies would have to line up with the TV shows. Marvel does it the other way around.
A separate universe is good because you have a separate fan base as well. You could hate Man of Steel but love Arrow or vis versa.
DC has learned from Marvel that having a cinematic universe is a good idea and they are doing it. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, The Batman, Man of Steel 2.
Marvel has learned from DC that TV shows are good route to go and they are doing it. The Defenders Netflix series. I would rather see these shows on abc though.
