The Halo 5 Guardians trailer released at this year's E3 opens with Master Chief wandering through a desert wearing a ragged cloak. When he removes his hood, we see the iconic helmet battered and broken. Then an enormous Promethean in the shape of an owl rises from the ground.
Take a look at that trailer here:
Agent Locke to take down Master Chief?
Master Chief will not be the only playable character in Halo 5. There will also be Agent Locke, a famous bounty hunter who we see talking with Halo 2's playable character the Arbiter in the trailer for the newly released Master Chief Collection.
The cover art for Halo 5 Guardians shocked fans by seeming to give equal importance to Master Chief and Agent Locke, depicting them both on the cover, one mirroring the other.
But could the presence of this new character hunting Halo's main character - with armor that makes him look like a upgrade on Master Chief - mean we could be nearing the end for the Halo hero?
Halo 5 Guardians: Renegade Hero?
Halo 4 saw Master Chief lose Cortana, his AI. Cortana was more than that though, she acted as a sort of conscience for Master Chief, and we can assume it her loss has driven him to the barren wastes we see in the Halo 5 Guardians trailer.
Master Chief may even now turn against the UNSC. 343's Bonnie Ross said about the main character at the E3 presentation:
He is human, he's always been human, but at the end of Halo 4 he really is reflecting on who he is and why he exists
With this more reflective tone, and the introduction of Agent Locke as a potential heir to Master Chief, could Halo 5 Guardians see the battered, renegade Halo star make his last stand, no longer working for anyone but himself?
Spielberg, the Xbox One and Halo TV
Alongside Halo 5 Guardians there are a number of other ways to get filled in with the Halo story. There are a number of Easter Eggs that have been inserted through all the previous Halo Games in the Master Chief Collection, and there are *two* TV shows coming to allow to fans delve deeper into the Halo Universe.
The first of those is the [Halo: Nightfall (Digital Feature)](movie:1427493), which has been made by the legendary director Ridley Scott. This show will follow Agent Locke, it is set in the time between Halo 4 and 5, and watching it will even open up new possibilities in Halo 5 gameplay.
The second show is even bigger, directed by Steven Spielberg, 343 industries and Microsoft have announced the Halo TV Series, to will be made with TV network Showtime. By combining TV, Video Games and interactive digital content, Halo wants to change the way storytelling happens for good.
Whether Master Chief is part of it, though, we will have to wait and see.
