Of all the upcoming Marvel movies, the one whose plot fans are most certain of is Thor 3.
Craig Kyle, an executive producer on Thor, has spoken on the subject in the past. As has Chris Hemsworth, who said:
I think that in the comic book the sort of end of days, Armageddon aspect is probably the direction in which it will all head in.
And the "end of days, Armageddon aspect" can only mean one thing: Ragnarok, the Norse Apocalypse.
It is one of the most interesting, complex and awesome story lines out there. And it would introduce Surtur, the fire demon whose homeland of Muspelheim was glimpsed briefly in [Thor: The Dark World](movie:206462).
Surtur: Thor's Greatest Foe?
Surtur is a fire demon of immense proportions. Over 1,000 feet tall and stronger than Thor, Surtur rules over the fiery realm of Muspelheim. He has the ability to transform his fingers into serpents, possesses a vast and ancient knowledge, and carries an enormous Sword, known as Twilight, or the Sword of Doom.
Originally Surtur was imprisoned in Muspelheim after he attempted to overthrow Odin, conspiring in insurrection with the Trolls.
Thor and Surtur have done battle many times in the comics, but perhaps nowhere more memorably than in Ragnarok, the expected plot for Thor 3, when Surtur manages to invade Asgard and brings chaos and destruction to Valhalla.
Thor 3 Ragnarok: The End of Asgard, and Loki!
The end of [Thor: The Dark World](movie:206462) saw Loki sitting on Asgard's throne, disguised as Odin. If he is discovered, there is no doubt that Loki would be exiled, and with almost no hope of regaining access to Asgard. Could this be the start of Thor 3?
And that is where Surtur may come in. In the Ragnarok storyline, Loki combines forces with Surtur and it is up to Thor to fight off both his rebellious brother and the massive, sword wielding fire god.
Without wanting to give too much away, Thor manages to battle off Surtur, repelling him but not defeating him, but loses his hammer Mjolnir in the process. Needless to say, his punishment for Loki is short and swift.
That, however, is just the beginning of Ragnarok, and Surtur returns with a vengeance, marching with all his forces on Asgard. This time, however, Thor has given him access to his own homeland!
So what do you think? Will [Thor 3](movie:956858) introduce Surtur, the fire god that is Thor's greatest enemy? Write in with your own thoughts on the subject below!
