That's what the latest rumors would have us believe. Leonard Nimoy has appeared in the last two Star Trek films, but Shatner has yet to cameo. The actor has been quite vocal in the past about wanting to appear in the new films, and it now seems, thanks to professed Trekker Roberto Orci, he may finally be getting his chance!
Apparently, there is a scene within the upcoming third Star Trek film, which Orci will direct, that re-teams Shatner and Nimoy. If this is the case, it will be the first time since the original Kirk and Spock have appeared on screen together since 1991's Star Trek IV: The Undiscovered Country.
If this does indeed happen, it would be a huge moment for fans, and could very well be the last time we see William Shatner as James T. Kirk in official Star Trek continuity.
Now, keep in mind, while the film is supposed to begin production in the next six months, it won't be hitting theaters for a little while, so plot points could change. After all, there was a planned William Shatner cameo for 2009's Star Trek, but it was axed before filming began.
Additionally, both Orci and Shatner have responded to this supposed rumor. Orci responded to the rumor by leaving a couple messages on TrekMovie.com. In his first message, he states, "Love no win scenarios. In theory, damned either way." And then he followed it up with:
"Not in my interest to confirm or deny anything because it limits my options while maintaining my integrity as a truth teller. The movie is not the movie till it is in the theater. Until then, everything is a rumor."
Meanwhile, Shatner took to Twitter to also comment on this rumor...
So, for now, as Mr. Orci says, everything is a rumor. Still, this would be great to see! To have the original Kirk and Spock on screen again for the first time in 25 years, now that would be worth the price of a movie ticket! Here's hoping this one actually manifests itself when Roberto Orci brings [Star Trek 3](movie:817262) to theaters some time in the summer of 2016.
