There are some movie characters you can't help feeling like you grew up with - heroes or villains, they helped define our childhoods almost as much as the start of the school year, whoever was playing Batman, and the increasingly ridiculous price of candy.

Within that select group of heroes, though, there are a handful who more or less all of us grew up with - who fundamentally defined what it was to be a kid for pretty much everyone.

Luke Skywalker is very much one of them.

As played by Mark Hamill, he was the hero of countless millions of childhoods - a noble, honest ideal for us to look up to until we got old enough to want to be Han Solo.

And, so, since it's Mark Hamill's 63rd birthday, we thought we should celebrate the awesomeness that is...

Wait, 63rd birthday?

That can't be right.

He's Luke Skywalker. He looked like this when I was a kid:

How can he be 63?

I mean, sure, he made A New Hope in 1977.

And Empire Strikes Back in 1980.

And Return of the Jedi in 1983.

But that wasn't that long ago, was it?

No, wait, that was way before I was born.

Holy crap.

But he was the Joker too, right, in Batman: The Animated Series?

Wait, that ran between 1992 and 1995? That was like twenty years ago...

And Wing Commander III?

That game was seriously released in 1994?

So, wait, that episode of The Simpsons he was in?

That was 1998? Really?

But Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, with his awesome parodying of himself, that wasn't that long ago, surely?

2001! That was thirteen years ago?

Seriously? I mean, I guess he kind of looked older even then.

And, actually, he does have an insane IMDb page, with 262 acting Credits!

So, y'know what? Those new pictures of him on the Star Wars: Episode VII set?

He looks awesome for 63.

Way to go Luke. It's almost enough to distract from the fundamental weirdness that is 2012's Sushi Girl...

Oh, and Happy Birthday Mark Hamill! We love you even more now that [Star Wars: Episode VII](movie:711158) is on its way!

What do you guys think? Can you believe Mark Hamill is 63?
