We here at Moviepilot pride ourself in being all about the empowerment of you, the passionate, comment-dropping, movie-devouring super-fan. So it's a bit weird that we've so far neglected the one area where you rule like a generous tyrant: crowd-funding.

This post is an attempt to change this deplorable fact.

Below you can check out 10 Kickstarter projects that I found worth considering, for one reason or another. Some look good, some just plain weird - all of them want your money.

These are hard times but perhaps you can find it in your heart of movie buff hearts to invest in...

Urbance

Kickstart what?

A Canadian web-series for audiences over 16 (read: it's saucy & violent).

What's the story?

Set in a dystopian future in which sex is prohibited, Urbance tells a Romeo & Juliet-esque love story "with stunning visuals and blasting tunes." Ok then.

You may want to have a look at the trailer, which looks quite spectacular.

What's the goal?

$189,000

Why you should invest?

Again, watch the trailer!

Friendly Ghost

Kickstart what?

A "road movie with a supernatural twist based on an award winning James Dean-Short."

What's the story?

A real-estate agent from New York embarks on a life-changing road trip to Los Angeles with a mysterious stranger and a chest full of Elvis memorabilia. Director Parker Ellerman describes the tone of the movie as Field of Dreams-ish.

What's the goal?

$400,000

Why you should invest?

Two Friendly Ghosts, the short film on which Friendly Ghost is based, boasts surprisingly high production values and doesn't shy away from old-fashioned sentimentality. The director is clearly very passionate about the project.

This is your chance to travel back in time and meet James Dean!

Blood, Sweat, and Beer

Kickstart what?

A documentary about "the explosive growth of the craft beer industry."

What's the story?

The dramatic struggle of two start-up breweries.

What's the goal?

$12,000 (for post-production. The rough cut of the film was finished without outside financing.)

Why you should invest?

Being a Moviepilot reader, chances are you like good beer. Plus Blood, Sweat, and Beer sounds like a David vs Goliath story and everybody likes those, right?

XMAS in July

Kickstart what?

A psychodelic adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Charol.

What's the story?

To properly experience what the movie is about, you could pop in a psychedelic drug of your choosing and then read the synopsis of Charles Dickens' novel. As this is a particularly bad idea, just have a look at the official movie synopsis please:

XMAS IN JULY follows struggling couple EBENEZER & CRATCHIT (Joel Clark, Crichton Atkinson) as they live out three alternate reality scenarios, in which they experience some measure of success, but find each dream to be more nightmarish than the last. After an epic journey through these different lives, they are left right back where they started and faced with the burning question of how to proceed/succeed in life without sacrificing the values they hold most dear.

Why you should invest?

XMas In July certainly isn't your run-of-the mill kind of project. You'd be investing in something special. For once, you'd be the answer to: "how the hell did this ever get made?!"

A Brief History of Time Travel: A Mindbending Documentary!

Kickstart what?

A documentary about the theme of time travel and how it was used in works of art.

What's the story?

"A Brief History of Time Travel is the biography of an idea, chasing time travel from the ancient Mahabharata to the streets of Los Angeles." The idea being time travel of course...

What's the goal?

$35,000

Why you should invest?

A Brief History of Time Travel: A Mindbending Documentary seems to present its interesting subject in an interesting sort of way. It's... interesting!

Cindy

Kickstart what?

The web-series retells the Cinderella fairy tale - as a reality TV show.

What's the story?

Cinderella gets a 21st century make-over: The Fairy Godmother has a drug problem, the Handsome Prince is so old he could be Cinderella's father.

What's the goal?

$18,000 (for essential post-production flourishes such as sound, score and editing).

Why you should invest?

Larry Wilson, the creator of the project, wrote Beetlejuice, The Adams Family and Adams Family Values. Cindy sounds like the kind of project he excels at.

Game Loading

Kickstart what?

A documentary about the vibrant global community of independent game developers.

What's the story?

"In the spirit of movements like the French New Wave, the Punk scene and the Grunge scene, hundreds of indie auteurs are emerging and finding success with their own unique voices and artistic goals. GameLoading: Rise of the Indies aims to capture this exciting moment in time."

What's the goal?

$50,000

Why you should invest?

Although we've seen our fare share of gaming documentaries (Zach Braff's Video Games: The Movie), Game Loading explores undiscovered country far off the mainstream.

When Julia Met Che Guevara

Kickstart what?

A documentary about the final moments in the life of Che Guevara.

What's the story?

Presumably the documentary will concentrate less on the life of the famed revolutionary and more on the impact he made on the people of Bolivia, in particular the then-18-year-old Julia Cortez.

What's the goal?

$30,000

Why you should invest?

You can't get enough of Guevara, even after Steven Sodebergh's exaustive two-parter Che and Walter Salles' coming of age drama The Motorcycle Diaries? Here's your chance to invest in more!

Hard Hatted Woman

Kickstart what?

A documentary about "women breaking down gender barriers in blue-collar construction trades."

What's the story?

The documentary sheds light on the shocking fact that less than 3% of the construction workforce is female.

What's the goal?

$25,000

Why you should invest?

The title of the project has a certain Springsteen-esque ring to it. As a giant fan of the Boss, I couldn't help but including it. "Important subject matter" would be the answer for non-Springsteen fans.

The Call Room

Kickstart what?

A workplace comedy about a group of telemarketers.

What's the story?

The day-to-day life of a band of kooky telemarketers trying to make sense of their jobs and lives.

What's the goal?

$25,000

Why you should invest?

Even if the material presented isn't exactly a laugh-fest, the setting has potential and The Call Room clearly is a labor of love.
