Paul Thomas Anderson is one of those rare can't-miss directors. Whether he is exploring the genesis of our country's love affair with oil and power in There Will Be Blood, or taking a comedic and heartbreaking look at the 1970's disco era in Boogie Nights, he always crafts quality and authentic films. His past couple of movies have been very dramatic and heady, so he is making a refreshing return to his comedic side, in his adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's novel, Inherent Vice.
Anderson once again has assembled the top acting talent in Hollywood to help bring the zany novel to life. Included in the cast are Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Reese Witherspoon, Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, Martin Short, and Michael K. Williams among others. They will be helping to create a movie that Anderson hopes to be "like a Cheech & Chong movie." From the looks of the trailer it will be an extraordinarily wacky ride. It also seems to be a spiritual cousin to The Big Lebowski, however expect the film to possibly explore darker places than that film. Check it out:
A lot of eyes are on Phoenix right now, as rumors persist that he is Marvel's top choice for their upcoming Doctor Strange movie. The word is that negotiations are hinging on his ability to explore other projects, such as Inherent Vice. Judging by The Master, Her and this trailer, he is on quite a hot streak and even if Marvel fails to secure him, it should still be a treat to see the varying projects he selects in the future.
Inherent Vice opens in limited release on December 12th, 2014.
