Remember that whole Stan Lee is The Watcher theory? Y'know, the one we talked about a couple of days ago?

Well, the gist of it is this: Stan Lee's recurring cameos in pretty much every Marvel movie mean that - for the films to make sense - he must be playing the same character. The most likely candidate? The Earth-monitoring extraterrestrial The Watcher.

This guy.
This guy.

The only problem? Stan 'The Man' Lee just came out and debunked the whole theory in one fell swoop.

The cad.
The cad.

Speaking at the Alamo City Comic Con, Lee was asked outright by a fan whether or not he was The Watcher. His first, joking response filled us all with hope:

“Well, I will admit I’ve been keeping my eye on all of you.”

Before the comic-book legend dashed those same hopes with:

“No, I’m afraid I don’t have any super power and I’m not extraterrestrial. Though, I’ll admit I’m a wonderful human being, but I’m really just a little more wonderful than most.”

So, the whole Stan Lee is The Watcher theory's out the window then, right?

Well, as it turns out, maybe not so much.

Take a look at those quotes again, when Stan himself actually says them (you can skip to around the 10:20 mark for the good stuff):

Now, here's the thing. When Stan says:

“No, I’m afraid I don’t have any super power and I’m not extraterrestrial. Though, I’ll admit I’m a wonderful human being, but I’m really just a little more wonderful than most.”

I don't think he's talking about the movies there - instead, he's very much talking about himself.

Something he's always been happy to do...
Something he's always been happy to do...

So that answer he just gave? That's Stan deflecting an awkward question he doesn't want to answer in the exact same way all of our grandparents do: By pretending he didn't understand the question, answering a slightly different one, and then pointing out that we should really call more.

Nicely played, Stan.

Or should I say...The Watcher...

In this example, Moviepilot is metaphorically Odin.

Either way, it's probably about time to get pumped for Stan's appearance in [The Avengers: Age Of Ultron](movie:293035) next year...

What do you guys think? Is Stan Lee still (secretly) The Watcher?
