The Day of the Dead is everywhere these days; calaveras have been adopted by everyone from punks to Pixar. But The Book of Life director, Jorge Gutierrez, doesn't just rely on cool kaleidoscopic animation, he takes the classic Shakespearean love story Romeo and Juliet, and he runs with it.

The story follows that of Manolo, who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart. Before choosing which path to follow, he embarks on an incredible adventure that spans three fantastical worlds where he must face his greatest fears.

Intrigued? Check out the new featurette for the Guillermo del Toro-produced animation. It's called "Heart Of A Hero," and it gives us a better look at stars Channing Tatum (as the mustachioed Joaquin) and Diego Luna (as Manolo).

You always know a del Toro film when you see one. And while del Toro has definitely left his fingerprints on The Book Of Life, there's a fresh spark of life here that's all Gutierrez's, as he appears to be honoring the holiday through the story and his art direction.
