Actors and actresses have been known for pushing themselves to the limit for the art of the cinema. Many embark on doing their own beserk stunts. All we have to do is have a look at Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible 2 clambering between rocks, gorges and cliffs to get a sense of just how far an actor is willing to go to get the perfect shot (he even tore a shoulder muscle in the process but still carried on like a trooper).

Sometimes in the process it doesn't quite go to the blue print and stars find themselves in sticky situations! On the bright side their misfortune provides entertaining reading for us, so let us have a look into some of the stunt mishaps that happened to a few of the A-listers we know and love.

1. Jamie Alexander in Thor: A Dark World

Whilst filming Thor: A Dark World, the stunning Jamie Alexander had an unusual run in... with a staircase. Okay, I admit, this isn’t one of the most dangerous stunts an actor has ever done. Actually, it’s not even a stunt at all. She just fell off a staircase.

‘It was raining, it was dark outside, it was like five in the morning — and I went down a metal staircase and slipped. It took me out of filming for a month,’ Jamie said in an interview with the New York Post.

However, she did do some serious damage to herself and racked up an impressive shopping list of injuries:

  • slipped a disc in her spine
  • Broke 10 vertebrae
  • Dislocated left shoulder
  • Tore a rhomboid (shoulder muscle)

Ouch! Poor girl. You can see how it could happen though, on a wet metal staircase. Hell, I often slip over just walking on concrete. You’ll be glad to know that she made a full recovery to the delight of her many fans, me included (damn she’s hot).

2. John Abraham shot by co-star in Wadala!

Now for number two we have something a bit more hardcore. Actually it’s in a different league in terms of hardcore.

John Abraham, the Bollywood actor, was nearly killed after being shot by his co-star! Doesn’t sound like they had a good working relationship! Admittedly it was with a blank bullet, but still I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of it. I hear you call ‘but it was a blank how did it hurt?’ Blank bullets do still fire empty shells with a surprising velocity, and in the scene his co star Anil Kapoor was meant to shoot him from a distance of 15 feet but the guys who were in charge of making sure the scene went to plan made a class A cock-up, and Abraham was shot from just 1 foot away!

Luckily Kapoor had a shocking aim and hit the side of his neck - if he hit him in the middle it would have been a very different story!

‘Everything happened in the heat of the moment. Nobody expected the intensity and the velocity of those blank bullets. I should have checked the gun,’ is what Kapoor had to say of the matter.

Luckily they’re still close enough to be able to talk about as you can see in this interview here:

3. Isla Fisher nearly drowns in Now You See me.

In at number three we have something that is actually my worst nightmare. Drowning. Makes me shiver and wriggle just thinking about it.

Isla Fisher (37) in Now You See me came far too close to death when filming a scene where she was submerged in water...CHAINED!

Her chains became stuck and she was under water for a whole three minutes. That is actually ridiculous - I can’t hold my breath for even a minute. Actually, I’m just gonna test that…

… yup, 49 seconds. Pathetic.

But anyway the actress who is married to Sacha Barren Cohen, was surprisingly calm in the aftermath saying...

‘My chain got stuck. I had to really swim to the bottom; I couldn’t get up. Everyone thought I was acting fabulously. I was actually drowning. No one realised I was actually struggling.’

She managed to escape using a quick release switch and the aid of a stuntman who was nearby.

I wonder if she’s ever been able to have a bath since. I certainly wouldn’t.

4. Statham drives a truck into the sea...

And in at number 4 it’s our favourite bald headed macho Jason Statham (or probably least favourite). A man who is known for doing all his stunts is probably used to close calls and near misses.

During the filming of [The Expendables 3](movie:388705) Statham also had a near drowning experience where he was driving a truck and the brakes failed, sending him plummeting to the bottom of the Black Sea!

His co-star Terry Crews said, ‘We’re doing a stunt and Jason was driving the truck. But the truck doesn’t stop and it goes over the dock, into the Black Sea with Jason driving. He’s in the water, in the truck. Now we are freaking out, everybody’s screaming. He gets out, swims to the top, and the truck is gone. Jason Statham is a true bad, bad dude.’

A genuine Bad Dude indeed! Kudos Jason for taking it like a man. And more importantly, kudos on Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Wow.

5. Jonny Depp has an argument with a horse.

Last but not least its our favourite loveable pirate Jonny Depp. During the filming of Pirates of the Carribbean the 50 year old was riding a horse when the saddle came loose and he was thrown from the horse, and in true stereotypical action scene fashion, his foot got caught to the reins and was dragged 25 yards on his head!

Here’s his take on the event, ‘My horse had it in for me. Scout decided to jump over a few obstacles. I was still holding on to the mane like an idiot trying to get back up and at a certain point you have to make a decision, do I go down and hit the deck on my own? Or do I wait for the hoof to split my face in two? I decided to go down and, incredibly, the horse lifted its front legs and he missed me.’

The star was incredibly lucky as being kicked in the face by horse is something you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy. A kick to the face from a stallion like stout would be worse than a haymaker from Mike Tyson!

If Depp didn’t have enough bad karma he also survived a plane crash filming The Rum Diaries in 2011. I think it’s safe to say he’s lost a few cat lives!

Would you ever do your own stunts?
