I was super impressed with the conversation that Deadline recently had with actor Robert Downey Jr., discussing [The Judge](movie:739892), [Iron Man 4](movie:886190) and RDJ's personal life. It was very candid, real, and honest, which line up some of my favorite things about Robert Downey Jr. himself. Kit already covered RDJ's talk of Iron Man 4. But what about everything else? Here are some highlights:

He Wants Mel Gibson to Direct Iron Man 4

According to RDJ, Gibson is a changed man and no longer someone we'd rather watch in character than hear an opinion from:

Well, first off, he has changed so much. Nobody should make a case for somebody who just wants forgiveness but hasn’t changed, but he’s a fundamentally different guy. I think it was just the very worst aspects of somebody’s psyche being treated as though they were the blanket statement about a person.

Coming from Robert Downey Jr. himself, I'm almost willing to amend my previous hatin'. He goes on:

He has changed, but at the same time he’s still Mel. He and I are so similar in so many ways. He really, honestly is the first to admit his character defects and also is just a great, great collaborative guy.

And then, of course, this happened:

DEADLINE: True, but the year he made Apocalypto, I didn’t see a better movie and he was ignored and hasn’t directed since. Marvel badly wants [Iron Man 4](movie:886190) and you’ve said you aren’t doing it. How about the idea you’ll do that movie if Mel directs it?

DOWNEY: Correct.

DEADLINE: Is that our headline?

DOWNEY: Why not? That movie would be bananas.

Moving on...

Susan Downey is Snarky and Supportive

Most of us knew that.
Most of us knew that.

Really, you'd have to be when you're married to not only the highest-paid, but seemingly one of the most unpredictable actors in Hollywood:

I was doing a wire jump, and Shane Black, who I adore, came on and said, “We’re going to try to get this before lunch.” I’d been sitting around all morning, and I got up and I put on my boots and walked out, and put on the wire and said, “Jump to there?” We were in North Carolina and there were these stairs that I had to get up to the floor where the bedrooms were and I busted my ankle. For some reason or other I took off the boot, whatever I did, I got to the top of the stairs and I tripped, and kind of and banged it on something and hit the ground.
Right then, Susan came around the corner, she goes, “All right. Are you finally going to accept the fact that you’re injured and that you’re not a kid. Just look at you on the floor there. Look at you!” And she kind of kept walking through the kitchen and I was just lying there on my side, and it is just throbbing and I just started laughing.
hurrr durrrrrrr
hurrr durrrrrrr

Sounds like someone snagged themselves a real-life Pepper Potts. Not only is Susan brilliant, but she could probably take out a few supervillains mid-air if she had to.

He's Going to be a Dad Next Month

We noticed, junior.

In case you missed the adorable blast he made through his social media networks earlier this year, RDJ and Susan Downey are expecting a little girl, and he's getting excited:

... Having the promise of this little girl that’s coming in November, you just go my God, it’s just such a blessing. I didn’t set out for it to be this way, that right before I turn 50 I would have a little daughter.

[The Judge](movie:739892) is Only the Beginning

Some good ol' R&R
Some good ol' R&R

Team Downey has a pretty hefty schedule for the next few years. In fact, the studio is popping out a whopping eight movies, and RDJ says he's ready:

I’m turning 50 and now I’ll have two small kids instead of one grown one, and eight Team Downey projects with people who are imagining I’m not just spending Warner Bros’ money out of vanity, but that I’m taking it seriously. It all has become this thing that has to be figured out. It has come to a head, right now, where the points of departure will be.

Next up for Team Downey? Ben Stiller's take on Pinocchio and a horror-comedy called Cloaked.

This sounds super weird, but it's not hard to get excited for Team Downey and the family. I've been talking a lot about inspiration lately on this site, and I definitely think that Robert Downey Jr. fits into that category.

We love you, man.
