The Walking Dead Season 5 premiere is so close I can almost smell the stench of the undead.

Apart from all the zombie bashing and cannibal killing action, I'm really excited for this new season because I think we might finally be introduced to some iconic characters from the comic book source material.

We already know that Father Gabriel will have a prominent part to play, but he's just a priest with a dark past. He's hardly going to crack skulls and take names. But, I want to see are some badass dudes take the fight to both the undead and leaving - and if they drop an F-bomb along the way, all the better.

So here are three kick-ass characters from the comic I think could make a big impact this Season. What do you guys think?

Warning, mild comic book spoilers to follow.

Paul "Jesus" Monroe

Street-Fighting Man
Street-Fighting Man

Who's he?

In a world populated with badasses, it's a testament to Paul Monroe's skills that he's probably the most badass of the bunch. Called Jesus due to his long hair, beard, and the fact many in his community think of him as a sort of savior, Jesus hails from the Hilltop Colony but soon runs into Rick and the gang as they approach the Alexandria Safe-Zone. He later becomes Rick's right-hand man.

Why should I care?

Jesus, who is also gay, has unparalleled close-combat fighting ability, proved when he easily disarmed both Michonne and Abraham when encountering them in Washington DC. He's a skilled escape artist, a loyal friend and trusted lieutenant. In a dogfight, you wouldn't want anybody else but him watching your back.

"King" Ezekiel

All Hail the King
All Hail the King

Who's he?

The self-proclaimed "King" of a community called The Kingdom, Ezekiel's flamboyant appearance masks a man with an analytical brain and a warrior's temperament. Oh, and he's also got a pet tiger called Shiva who loves chowing down on undead flesh.

Why should I care?

Were you not paying attention? He's got a motherf--king tiger as head of security! Seeing these two on The Walking Dead would probably be the greatest thing to ever happen on television.

Negan

He's Bad to the Bone
He's Bad to the Bone

Who's he?

Quite simply, Negan is the biggest and baddest mofo you're ever likely to encounter on The Walking Dead. He has an unhealthy attachment to his barbed wire baseball bat, Lucille, and takes a sadistic pleasure in introducing her to people's skulls. He's the leader of the Saviors and the biggest threat Rick and the group have ever had to face.

Why should I care?

You know the crazy thing about Negan? Despite him being a murdering maniac he's also incredibly charismatic, delivering some of the best lines in the comic book. He also says "fuck" all the fucking time, so quite how AMC will be able to show this remains to be seen.
