Jeff Daniels is close to confirming a lead role in Ridley Scott's upcoming The Martian, starring alongside Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain, in an unspecified role.

Damon stars as an astronaut stranded on Mars while his colleagues back on Earth figure out how to get him back to safety. Scott only came on board when the original director Drew Goddard stepped down - though he'll be using his script.

The tense thriller is a safe bet for Daniels, who's had a career resurgence after starring in The Newsroom, and is pretty good at playing men in tight spots.

It's an obvious choice for Ridley, too, who's a master of sci-fi drama, most notably in Alien and Prometheus.

But Daniels isn't the only card on the table - also rumored to be attached are Kristen Wiig and Kate Mara. By the sounds of it, the cast will be stellar. Time will tell if the script will follow suit.
