A couple visiting a famous British landmark, dubbed "the most haunted Castle in England," has taken a chilling photo of what seems to be the building's most famous - and spooky - resident: the Grey Lady.

The eerie apparition has supposedly haunted the castle for centuries and although there have been countless sightings of her over the years, the scary specter had never been caught on film... until now.

The couple was in the courtyard surrounded by crumbling ruins when they took the photo, but it wasn't until they checked the image later in the evening that they were shocked by what they saw:

Is that the Grey Lady?
Is that the Grey Lady?

This is what husband Dean Harper had to say about their paranormal encounter:

Amy saw a glow, as though a light was on, on the top window level. On zooming in we noticed on the bottom, inside an arch, there was a lady and what appears to be a girl, too. Neither of us are ghost hunters but we do wonder if this could be the Grey Lady ghost – the picture is quite clear.

This terrifying tale a little too close to home

When I first read about this creepy story I was properly chilled to the bone. This is not because I spook easy or have a crippling fear of the color grey, but because, dear readers, I was born in sight of Dudley Castle and actually spent two weeks there as 13 year old doing work experience.

And let me tell you, hearing the frightening tales of the Grey Lady as a young kid while working in the confines of the castle can do serious damage to your childhood.

Legend has it that the Grey Lady is the spirit of Dorothy Beaumont. She lived at the castle for a time but it ended in tragedy when her daughter died soon after being born. It's believed that Dorothy was so wracked with grief and sorrow that she died soon after of a broken heart.

Dorothy's last wish was to be buried in the grounds of the castle alongside her husband and daughter, but this never happened. Now the Grey Lady wanders the grounds in an eternal and desperate attempt to be reunited with her family.

Like I said, it's a story likely to give impressionable young kids (like I was) nightmares for weeks - especially if they have to go to work there everyday, sometimes staying until after dark when all the visitors have gone home, left all alone with only your thoughts, the cold stone walls and a shadowy figure hiding in the shadows for company.

Do you think this is a photo of the Grey Lady?
