The casting of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in Batman vs Superman has proved to be one of the most controversial aspects of the entire story of Dawn of Justice so far - but it could get even more fraught, as there is one crucial piece of information about the Amazon warrior woman that we still don't know: where does she comes from?
There are, however, to major theories doing the rounds. So let's take a look t each:
Wonder Woman is from Krypton
In [Man of Steel](movie:15593), when Superman visits the Fortress of Solitude and finds the skeletons of kryptons in their cryogenic pods, there is one pod open, with no skeleton inside. Does that mean there is another Krypton, who came to Earth much earlier than Superman? How does that relate to Wonder Woman?
Well, the theory goes that this was Kara Zor-El, who wandered the earth thousands of years ago, before setting up a birthing pod of our own, and giving rise to a race of warrior women whose super strength made them known to the Greeks as Amazons, but were in fact Kryptons. Diana Prince, then, aka Wonder Woman, is a distant cousin of Superman.
This theory has some advantages to it - it would explain the missing pod, and it would mean we don't need to buy into another source of supernatural power other than Krypton. But it also has disadvantages. It makes Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman a knock-off version of Superman, and removes from her some of the backstory that comes with her alternative origin story.
Wonder Woman, Daughter of Zeus
This origin comes from The New 52 (there is another telling in which she is sculpted from Clay). Queen Hippolyta of the Amazons, became the lover of Zeus, and gave birth to a daughter whose identity she disguised in order to save the child front he wrath of Hera, Zeus' wife, who was known to track down and murder her husband's illegitimate offspring.
This version of her origins has the advantage of placing Wonder Woman in a world of warring Gods and Goddesses, which would work well as DC have Gal Gadot signed up for 3 movies, and could introduce other characters such as Circe, Ares and others.
This version also sets up an interesting prospect when it comes to the villain of Batman vs Superman. Amazons live on the island of Themyscira, and stand guard over Doom's Doorway. We know that Zack Snyder's movie has already begun shooting scenes in Themyscira - could this be part of the introduction of Doomsday, the villain powerful enough to require the
Everything is still up in the air as of yet, but what would you prefer? Should Gal Gadot's [Wonder Woman](movie:45787) be from Krypton, or a daughter of Zeus? Have your say below the line!
