The History of Prey 2.
Human Head Studios, 3D Realms, Radar Group, Bethesda Softworks, Zenimax Media, Obsidian Entertainment, Arkane Studios. This is the list of development studios, publishers and other companies that have been involved with the production of Prey 2 since the rumors surfaced that the game was being worked on back in 2006. 8 years down the road we're still not so sure what's happening with it.
The game was initially announced on March 14th, 2011 even though 3D Realms' Scott Miller had confirmed that the game was being worked on not long after the release of Prey. It was to be developed by Human Head Studios on a heavily modified Id Tech 4 engine. This is what we saw at E3 and it looked amazing especially with a Johnny Cash song backing it:
The initial rights were transferred over to the Radar Group and was subsequently picked up by Bethesda Softworks after a short while they released this trailer. They apparently wanted to make it clear that they were not developing the game that Radar Group had announced but their own up-to-date version. We were getting great pictures like this:
Then on March 23rd, 2012, a Dutch gaming site reported a rumor that Zenimax had cancelled Prey 2. Bethesda only responded on April 12th, 2012 merely stating that the game will not make its 2012 release date though it wasn't cancelled, due to their feeling that the game did not match the standards they uphold.
Finally, on August 20th, 2012 the nail was delivered into the coffin as the game was removed from the list of game's that were in development from Bethesda's website. Nothing much was heard until May 2013 where the game was reportedly heard to be in development with Arcane Studios, scrapping every bit of work that had been done before with a target date of 2016!
While this was denied by Bethesda, leaked emails in August 2013 revealed that the game was in fact development! What an insane history this game has had! Take a look at the emails below:
So what's happening with Prey 2 now?
At the moment it seems that studios are looking a bit like this guy here in relation to talking about the existence of Prey 2:
It seems that the game has been completely scrapped and many sources have confirmed that it has started development all over again, more than likely due to the release of the Xbox One and PS4 in the time that development was taking place.
Spokespersons for Bethesda are reluctant to talk about the game, but maintain that it is in the works, they are just holding it off until they are happy enough to reveal it.
Again, when we have more info on it, we’ll be happy to talk about it. That’s what I can say for now. - Pete Hines
