So after years of speculation and attempts to reboot the Ghostbusters franchise, it looks like a 3rd film is on the way.
It has been announced that Bridesmaids and The Heat director Paul Feig will direct a complete reboot of the Ghostbusters franchise. In a interview, Feig confirmed that the film will be both a total reboot and feature all female leads. He said the following;
"My favorite thing to do is work with funny women," Said Feig "I was like, what if it was an all female cast? If they were all women? Suddenly, my mind kind of exploded: that would be really fun.
It's always hard if the world has gone through this big ghost attack, how do you do it again? I wanted to come into our world where there's talk of ghosts but they're not really credible, and so what would happen in our world if this happened today?"
Paul Feig is a name that has been thrown around this project for quite a while now and whilst I think he's a decent fit for the film, I really don't care about the film, like a lot of you reading this.
For years and years there has been talk about rebooting The Ghostbusters franchise and in the past few months its seemed like there was too much talk for nothing to happen about it. As a fan of the original Ghostbusters I really do not want to see a remake because the charm of the original film is that 80's humor and the effects that were used back then. So as a fan I don't really want to see this, but I think a new film could work.
The reason I think it could work is because of Paul Feig, personally I was really hoping for Phil Lord and Chris Miller (21 Jump Street, The LEGO Movie) to direct the film but Paul Feig is also a good choice. Feig directed both Bridesmaids and The Heat, two popular female focused films that did well at the box office. Personally I wasn't a big fan of either of those films, I enjoyed them but didn't think they were great, but movie goers really enjoyed them and like I said before, they did well at the box office.
Feig works really well with actresses as he's proven before, he even directed Melissa McCarthy to an Oscar nomination, so I think hiring Feig to direct a female lead Ghostbusters film is a smart move. That leads on to the second announcement: A Female lead Ghostbusters movie.
In the past, the Ghostbusters have been four males so I think its a good move to switch it up for a new generation and go with a gender swap. As Feig has worked with Melissa McCarthy twice already, I'd say its a pretty safe bet to assume she'll be cast in the film. Names I'd also throw into the mix would be: Kristen Wiig, Amy Poehler and Emma Stone. Now if a cast like that was assembled for the film, than I'm all in, but for me it does depend on the cast that is hired for the film.
One last thing I have to mention is of course my condolences to Dan Ackroyd, who dreamed of a world with a Ghostbusters 3, unfortunately for Ackroyd, it doesn't look like he'll have a part in this new movie.
