That's right folks, Cassandra Clare's YA fantasy novels are looking to continue, but as a television show.
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones one of 2013's hottest book to movie adaptations starring Lily Collins as heroine Clary Fray and Jamie Campbell-Bower as shadow hunter Jace, was looking to produce a sequel for City of Ashes within the next few years. Production was postponed in early 2014 so that the production team could work out some issues with how to adapt the book to it's full potential. Considering the first film came out of the box office, earning just $31 million domestically, it was no surprise they had to rethink their plans.
Today it was announced that 'Helix' Showrunner Ed Decter will develop the fantasy franchise for television. Constantin Film, the production company that owns the rights to Cassandra Clare's best-selling YA fantasy franchise is re-launching it into a high-end drama series. The series is currently in development, with Constantin planning to begin production next year.
Head of Constantin, Martin Moszkowicz said “It actually makes sense to do (the novels) as a TV series. There was so much from the book that we had to leave out of the Mortal Instruments film. In the series we'll be able to go deeper and explore this world in greater detail and depth.”
I was a fan of the City of Bones movie, it was a fun, entertaining time with decent action and acting, however a lot of the heart and world of the book was left out of the film. City of Ashes wasn't my favourite book in the series and a movie version would probably have bored me, but that's just my opinion. A TV show, however could do this series a world of wonders. Six books, one season for every book. It's probably what they should have done in the first place. Which makes me wonder, will they start from scratch and recast or continue onto City of Ashes having the 2013 film as their starting point.
Lots have questions have been raised over the casting and broadcast network for the show. As for me, I can see it airing on The CW along with other popular supernatural shows such as, The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural and The Originals. A series with a wide fan base, full of teenagers and young adults should fit right in. As for casting, Lily Collins who played the main character Clary in the movie is busy doing other projects such as 'Love, Rosie' and 'How to Be Single', so I'm not sure if she'll return to the franchise. As for bad boy Jace Wayland also known as Jamie Campbell-Bower is lead signer of 'The Darling Buds' and from what I see on Instagram, he is a very busy boy. Having history in television, playing King Arthur in 2011's Camelot, we could see him return.
What could a TV series mean for the Shadowhunting world? Do we get The Infernal Devices too? Maybe her upcoming trilogy The Dark Artifices would be better for the big screen, who knows!?
So, are you excited about The Mortal Instruments TV show? If you have to pick a new Jace and Clary, who would they be?
