Christian Bale's jaw dropping body transformations make even Extreme Makeover look like a mere stroll in the park and the 40-year-old actor's buttocks have suffered unimaginably for his art.
In a recent Reddit AMA, Bale's The Machinist co-star, Michael Ironside, told a particularly horrifying story that is guaranteed to have you clenching your ass cheeks in sympathy. He told curious fans that:
I remember on The Machinist, I came to work one day, and we were shooting in Barcelona, Spain, and our trailers were these little Spanish 2-wheeled cabanas that were parked in front of this actual working machine shop. And I heard 'pssst...Michael!' from behind one of the cabanas...
And I went over, and it was Chris. And he said, 'Can you look at this?' And he turned and dropped his overalls, which he was naked under. And he had lost an INCREDIBLE amount of weight for the character. And he said 'Michael, there's something wrong with my ass, can you have a look?'
But, the Real Horror Begins Below...
And the muscles in his ass had literally dropped out of the sockets of his hips. The dignity of the muscles, his ass had literally dropped out of the hips and thigh bones. And I said, 'Hey Chris, your ass has dropped.' And he said, 'What do you mean?' And I said, 'You've stopped losing body fat, and now you're actually losing elasticity of muscles' - I forget the exact medical term for it, but I said, 'You've gone beyond body fat, and now you're into actual muscle tissue and things are being affected.
Bale's Response Was...Unusual
And he turned - I wasn't sure how he was going to react - and he turned, and said, 'Cool'
Yep, that's right, when Bale was confronted with the fact his ass cheeks were falling down his legs like a tennis ball in a sock, he said 'cool.' Let me summarize my feelings about that in GIF form for you:
For those of you out of the loop, Christian Bale lost a staggering 63 pounds for The Machinist back in 2004, which amounts to a third of his total body weight.
Just 6 weeks later, Bale had bulked himself back up to his normal size by gorging on pizza and ice cream to begin filming Batman Begins.
Although Bale's role as Trevor Reznik, a troubled industrial worker who hasn't slept for a year, in The Machinist demanded extreme weight loss, Ironside claims Bale pushed his six-foot frame a lot further then necessary. The 64-year-old actor told the Reddit AMA that:
The writer is only about five-foot-six, and he put his own weights in and then Chris did the film and Chris said, ‘No, don’t change the weights. I want to see if I make them.’ ... So those weights he writes on the bathroom wall in the film are his actual weights in the film
I guess when Bale told interviewers that he enjoyed the "challenge and slightly self-destructive urges involved in losing that amount of weight" he was deathly serious.
The Science Behind Your Ass Falling Off
But, can your ass really distend like that through extreme weight loss? Unfortunately, the answer is a resounding 'yes.'
In a condition named muscular atrophy, Individuals suffering from anorexia nervosa, or people who are unable to exercise their muscles enough, can see drastic changes in body structure such as one leg being shorter than the other due to muscle shrinkage. Tendons also become more elastic if they aren't provided enough nutrients, or aren't being exercised enough to maintain tone.
This condition is probably also responsible for pictures of stick thin models displaying bizarrely misshapen buttocks on the runway like so:
