Will the Jim Henson Company bring back the beloved world of the 1986 cult classic. Short answer: probably not, but here’s why there could be hope for Labyrinth fans. In a Variety article about upcoming adaptation Which Witch?, the author let slip that the Jim Henson Company is developing an array of “legacy titles,” including Fraggle Rock, The Dark Crystal, and, of course, a [Labyrinth Sequel](movie:919265).
The internet collectively freaked out over a possible return to the serpentine maze full of menacing creatures and Escher-like staircases. Despite no actual confirmation, the chance of seeing David Bowie in makeup and tights as Jareth the Goblin King was enough to get even the most fair-weather fans excited.
But, soon after the announcement, an unnamed source (who clearly enjoys trampling on my dreams) told Entertainment Weekly that there are no Labyrinth projects in the works:
While they are working on a Fraggle Rock movie and a Dark Crystal sequel, as the Variety article stated, there are currently no plans to reboot, revive, or make a sequel to Labyrinth. It's one of those legacy titles that is floated at most meetings, but, sadly, nothing is actually in development at the moment.
Despite the new source, the line remains unredacted in the original Variety article. So, what gives? Is a sequel totally off the table, or are execs now backtracking to preserve some intrigue around a leaked project?
Either way, would you return for another adventure in the Labyrinth?
