Doesn't everyone love a good proposal story? Even I, the self-proclaimed spinster that I am, find joy in watching people agree to the massive commitment that is spending the rest of their lives with one special person. It sounds stressful to me, but when done right, it's very very sweet and we all love it.

So this post is dedicated to those men and women who are willing and able to lay it all on the line. I don't know about you, but since I'm not being constantly proposed to, most of the proposal knowledge I have comes from movies and a rare few real life examples. Here is my list of my favorite cinematic proposals plus an added bonus real one that you can help participate in!

The Wedding Singer (1998)

The proposal: The song "I Wanna Grow Old With You"

True, Adam Sandler singing a song he wrote for you on an airplane to save you from your vicious, cheating fiancé is a plus. But if anyone can get Billy Idol to assist you with your proposal, you can rest assured that you're going to get a hard yes.

A Walk to Remember (2002)

The proposal: "Will you marry me?"

I first saw this movie when I was about 10, and it was my first brush with Nicolas Sparks. Shane West and Mandy Moore played my heartstrings like a goddamn harp. The proposal is a classic, but he also built her a telescope. Amazing, considerate, and way bigger than any engagement ring I've ever seen.

The Notebook (2004)

The proposal: "I want all of you, forever, you and me, every day."

Another Sparks classic. But instead of a telescope, this time he built her a HOUSE. While technically not a proposal, he is declaring his eternal love for her and asking her to be with him forever. So, yeah I guess it is. An argumentative one, but he does make a compelling case. This scene also inspired one of the best memes ever that encapsulates everyone's emotions.

Love Actually (2003)

The proposal: "Beautiful Aurelia, I've come here with a view of asking you to marriage me. I know I seems an insane person - because I hardly knows you - but sometimes things are so transparency, they don't need evidential proof. And I will inhabit here, or you can inhabit with me in England...Of course I don't expecting you to be as foolish as me, and of course I prediction you say 'no'...but it's Christmas and I just wanted to...check."

Ahh the language of love needs no translation. Or maybe moderate translation, no one's going to be picky when the proposal is that sweet and heartfelt.

Sweet Home Alabama (2002)

The proposal: The words don't even matter here. This man took Reese into Tiffany's and was all like "Pick one!" Who does that?? Patrick-freakin-Dempsey, that's who.

Lucky Reese, she actually gets two amazing proposals in this movie because the first one didn't quite work out. Technically the second one is more like a proposal to stay married, but I'm just going to count that too because it's so cute.

The proposal: "What do you want to marry me for, anyhow?"

"So I can kiss you anytime I want."

Umm okay, this is the best thing ever. If you ever intend on using this line on your significant other, please try to make sure that they're not fans of this movie, because then they'll know. And then it'll be awkward.

Pride and Prejudice (2005)

The proposal: "My affections and wishes have not changed, but one word from you will silence me forever. If, however, your feelings have changed, I will have to tell you: you have bewitched me, body and soul, and I love, I love, I love you. I never wish to be parted from you from this day on."

After walking towards each other for what seems like an eternity, they're finally united and then they never part again. He love, he love, he loves her and she love, she love, she loves him right back! I wasn't alive at the time (shocker, I know), but I can only image that this was some seriously scandalous stuff back in the early 1800's. Go them!

Sex and the City (2008)

The proposal: "Carrie Bradshaw, love of my life, will you marry me?"

I think that the biggest takeaways from this proposal are that classic proposals always work and that Sarah Jessica Parker is a tiny, tiny person with a MASSIVE closet.

When Harry Met Sally (1989)

The proposal: "I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible."

An absolute classic that slays the hearts of romantics everywhere. All anyone wants is someone to love that they get cold when it's 71 degrees out and that it takes them forever to order a sandwich!

Needs YOUR Help!

When it comes to romance I have the general and cynical viewpoint that nobody does love better than Hollywood. But in some instances, my icy heart is thawed by a truly amazing love story. For that reason I'd like to introduce you guys to a clever partner who would like to create an epic proposal of their own, and they need our help. Specifically, they need YOUR help.

To keep the proposal a secret we will just call the proposer (?) "J." J would like your help to propose to their girlfriend Elizabeth. Elizabeth, like many of us, loves the stories and videos of grand gesture proposals. So, like the good Internet folks we are, we've decided to lend a helping hand to this lovely couple!

If you believe that real love can be just as romantic as cinematic love (if you're reading this post then I'm guessing you do) then please comment, Tweet or Instagram words of encouragement with the hashtag or a picture of yourself holding a sign reading "" so that J can give Elizabeth the proposal she deserves, while maintaining some good 'ole anonymity!

The proposal:

You can also send all your kind words and pictures to J at [email protected]!

If you know of any sweet real life proposals, let's hear about them in the comments!
