Okay! We got some news out of Warner Brothers yesterday and it was almost like getting kicked right between the legs. Based on the New 52, assuming that is what a Justice League lineup will be based on in the movies, we came to six characters of the seven member team to be cast and confirmed. One of those confirmations was expected, the other, a major shocker and we will get to that later on, but in order lets look at what we have and then kick around what we don't have but are rumored to have and them maybe we'll speculate a little too.
For quite a while Warner Brothers has been dodging rumors that Jason Mamoa is [Aquaman](movie:264237), and Jason has done the same, even to the point of feigned anger because he was being prodded by reporters to confirm what he couldn't. Yesterday Warner Brothers put an end to the rumors and speculation and confirmed that this is indeed the man we will see in the costume of the Lord of Atlantis.
Aquaman has been cast and I think Jason Mamoa has a bold, powerful look and has acting experience in the type of roles you would want for someone with the kind of power and stature this character has. Rumors over the past two weeks have him as something of a beach bum/surfer and I seriously doubt that. I mean really, how far can they go with that idea in an Aquaman solo film, and that move has a tentative release date now. Jason Mamoa does have a look that goes on a beach though and maybe he does hit the beach and we can say that because, well, he lives in the sea. Being a king, though kind of eliminates the idea that he walks and talks like someone out of one of those old 50's and 60's bikini beach movies. This guy gets a big thumbs up on the pick for the part!
I loved this pick from the very moment it happened. Ben Affleck was one of my choices way back in 2007 when the Happy Feet guy was casting Justice League: Mortal. But originally it wasn't Batman I saw him playing and instead thought he was perfect as Hal Jordan but what do I know. True enough, a lot of people didn't like him because of the Daredevil fiasco but as I have said all along, the blame for that movie falls on the shoulders of the director and a poor script as much as on Ben's performance. So far everything points to a great new Batman and yeah, thumbs up on casting this guy!
I must confess I know nothing about Ray Fisher but if you put the pictures of the cast together there is a chemistry that shows. He won the part by beating out other possibilities so that says something for him. I am not a fan of Cyborg, and see this as meaning we might not see someone that I think has to be in a Justice League movie and that would be the Martian Manhunter. Times change and I accept that and when the film is rolling and people are in front of that huge screen in a theater with a sound system that makes it almost seem LIVE shaking the very framework of the building I don't think anyone will be unhappy that we have Cyborg
Okay, here it is, the shocker out of Warner Brothers over who will play the Flash after months and months of guessing, and even wishing or praying. We got a guy who I never even heard of and until I looked at this picture and watched and listened to video of him I was like "NO NO NO"! He is skinny, a mere child compared to Ben Affleck and still a lot younger than the rest of the cast so what are we doing with this, this kid?
The kid can act, apparently, and his voice has a quality to it that isn't bad, well actually I'll go as far as to say there was something dynamic about it and when I put the pictures of the six confirmed members of the team together I see a solid chemistry and I like the diversity among the six cast members. It hurt at first and maybe there are actors out there that would have been a better pick, who knows but I have to say, I'm giving Ezra Miller a big thumbs up, and I hope I don't have to eat crow later.
There is still not a peep from Warner Brothers on the subject of a Green Lantern beyond that there will be one. I still like the choice of Ryan Reynolds and the fact that he IS still under contract and did not rule out the possibility if the script and director were to his liking. WE have everything in place to lure him back, but then there is Deadpool over at Marvel and speculation hat he is playing the lead role in that movie, although that has not been confirmed my Marvel or the studio yet. Maybe this too will be a crazy out of the blue and off the wall move with a little known actor like what we got with The Flash. I guess we wait and see.
What is there that needs to be said about this actor or the part he plays? Based on the attraction of women alone having this guy on board is going to sell a lot of tickets. Will male moviegoers have a hard time finding seats in theaters because of this phenomenon, maybe. Henry Cavill is a fine actor and like it or not, he hit it out of the park in Man Of Steel. It was a good solid beginning both in popularity and as a box office draw and when this guy comes flying off movie screens with six teammates at his side I guarantee that movie fans will have trouble even spelling Avengers.
When Gal Gadot was chosen to play the part of [Wonder Woman](movie:45787) the number of fans who wanted somebody's neck on a guillotine was enormous, and I was one of those fans who had other ideas about who it should be. Part of that reaction came from not having a clue who she is and I liked Jamie Alexander and a couple of others and boom, I was floored by an unknown. Her appearance at Comic Con with Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill made me think about how she fits in the puzzle though. The costume is incredible; you want a warrior princess, not a bikini contest winner in her underwear and since when does bra size qualify someone's acting ability. That is, after all the first and most important qualification, can she act. How would the others who tested for the role and failed look in the costume? The picture shows a warrior princess, and her interaction onstage with Cavill and Affleck tells me this was a thumbs up choice!
What Is Left?
We still have rumors flying; there is a Green Lantern to find, possibilities over who the villain is, a possible sidekick and maybe one more JLA member to be added, and then there is how the story plays out now that we know that there are two movies in the planning, Justice League Part One and Justice League Part Two.
The rumor here is we are getting both of these guys and over the course of two movies we have plenty of room. But then where are we going in Batman v Superman? What makes sense is bring one of these two in at the end of Dawn of Justice and then play with the two villains in the JLA movies. But then we need something special in Dawn of Justice and we already have Lex Luthor and there is possibly to probably Metallo. If you are like me you have been carrying around the thought that in the story The Death Of Superman they butchered the story by having Guy Gardner, Blue Beetle and Booster Gold playing hero and getting punched out like jello molds when only an idiot would have believed that Batman and Wonder Woman would not have shown up to back Superman in a fight to the death. Its ridiculous. This is our big moment, our chance to see it done right and in the closing moments of the film bring in the rest of the team to close it out with a big win over he monster, but with one obvious deviation: Superman does not die!.
After the team is official at the end of Dawn of Justice, fill in background on the newcomers in JLA1 to the point that we now something about them without taking away origins in solo films and then get after Brainiac and work through two movies to an all out war with Darkseid and his minions. Its simple, and gives us roughly seven to seven and a half hours of action over the course of three movies
Everytime we are on the verge of clearing up rumors new ones seem to jump out of the closet. Newest rumor, we might have a Batman that has a sidekick and this Robin is female, like in the book The Dark Knight Returns. So here comes Jena Malone on the set of Batman v Superman at the side of Zach Snyder and with her newly colored red hair that oddly enough matches the hair color of Carrie Kelley who is Robin in Frank Miller's story. Is it happening? Based on how Warner Brothers handles things like this, like the Jason Mamoa is he in or is it just a rumor situation, I would say she wasn't on the set just for rumors sake.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST
One last thing, the rumor that Benadict Cumberbatch is being cast in any of the movies involving members of or the entire Justice League. It is possible this is Brainiac right here, and that would be a bit of great casting but for the sake of drawing in older fans of the Justice League why can't we have J'onn J'onzz, the Martian Manhunter? The predominant rumor is that is the character he is being cast to play. His response to the rumor is "we will have to wait and see how that plays out!" That is not a denial while what Jason Mamoa said was a definite denial and now we have Jason Mamoa confirmed. And if we go back to how the studio handled Chris Nolan's Batman trilogy we see a lot of that cloak and dagger denial - rumors flying cover up of what is actually going on. I would bet my money on this one playing out to be true, and while I would have liked Vin Diesel in the role because he looks like Manhunter, this would be a huge thumbs up.
So, now we are basically up to date on where we stand with what we do know, and what we might like to see when opening night rolls around in about a year and a half. Please leave your comments and as always, vote in the poll at the end.
