Marvel is entering a new phase in its cinematic universe. Avengers 2 Age of Ultron will introduce new characters like Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch, The Vision and, probably, Black Panther.
The more established characters however, like Captain America, Thor and Iron man, may well be about to leave. They will either be killed off, or replaced. At least, this is what many fans are speculating, especially after Robert Downey Jr was reported to appear in [Captain America 3](movie:994409), believed to center on the Marvel Civil War.
Thor 3: Ragnarok - The End of Loki & Thor?
So, if one or both of Captain America and Iron Man are expected to meet their end in the Civil War, how will Marvel manage Thor's exit from the MCU? Well, the plot line that is spoken about most with regard to
[Thor 3](movie:956858) is Ragnarok, the Norse End of Days.
This is a epic plot, and - just like with Captain America & Iron Man's arguing in [The Avengers](movie:9040), and Cap's repeated disagreements with SHIELD - many elements of Ragnarok may have been set in place already.
Thor: The Dark World ended with Loki sitting on the Throne of Asgard, disguised as Odin. And it is Loki's lust for power that gets him in trouble in Ragnarok, too. The plot of the planned [Thor 3](movie:956858) (which has been more or less confirmed by Chris Hemsworth, among others) sees Loki join forces with the Fire Demon Surtur, and attempt to bring down Asgard.
We saw a glimpse of Surtur's fiery home of Muspelheim in [Thor: The Dark World](movie:206462):
The entire plot of Thor 3 Ragnarok can be found elsewhere - but one major factor is that the Norse Apocalypse really does spell the end for some of the major characters.
Thor does not take take Loki's treachery lightly. He runs out of patience with his trickster brother, and literally rips his head from his shoulders. However, Thor's rampage does not end there. When he discovers that Asgard is doomed to fall and be reborn endlessly, he decides to literally cut the tapestry of time - allowing the citizens of Asgard and the rest of the universe to make their own decisions, rather than being prisonrs of fate.
Take a look at him cutting into time here - and yes, that is Loki's still alive but severed head hanging from his belt!
Thor DEAD, Loki DEAD, Captain America DEAD, Iron Man MISSING!
Thor decision to cut the cord of time, then, ultimately dooms him to death. Which means that after Captain America 3 and Thor 3, we could have a situation where we have, for example, Thor dead, Loki dead, Captain America dead & Iron Man either retired, or having left the planet entirely.
So where does that leave us ahead of [The Avengers 3](movie:738027)? Of course, Marvel does not have to - and probably won't stick strictly to the comic book story lines - but will the team takes down Thanos & his Infinity Gauntlet be made up of character like Black Panther, Ant-Man, Ms Marvel & the [Guardians of the Galaxy](movie:424073), rather than those that fought the Chitauri in New York?
What do you think? Could Marvel be getting rid of, or replacing, some of their main characters BEFORE Avengers 3? Who would *you* like to see step in to replace them? Write in with your own thoughts below the line!
