Which fairy tale villains are the most recent to grace Entertainment Weekly's holiday movie preview cover? Why the Big Bad Wolf and the Witch, of course! Disney's upcoming musical film Into the Woods has some seriously big name stars that I'm sure are going to be great. But how do their costumes hold up to the hype?
The Big Bad Wolf (Johnny Depp) and Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford)
Okay so let's talk about Lilla Crawford. At around 13-14 she looks stunning and so grown up! At that age I was, to put it nicely, much more unfortunate looking. Donning the classic Red Riding Hood cape, she just looks fantastic.
Now let's discuss Johnny. Before this image we had only gotten a mere glimpse at his wolfy hand in the trailer, but now we can really break it down. He's got a damn wallet chain and a zoot suit! This looks kind of like Johnny Depp playing Captain Jack Sparrow playing the Mad Hatter playing the Big Bad Wolf dressed as a 1940's jazz musician with a weird mustache. Or something like this...
I'm not saying it's bad, but since the rest of the cast is pretty much wearing earlier time piece costumes, I guess I'm just confused.
Rapunzel (Mackenzie Mauzy) and the Witch (Meryl Streep)
I am in love with all of the hair and the gowns in this picture. Gorgeous. Meryl looks like a far cry from the more haggard looking witch that we've seen in the trailer and other promotional images. I don't have much more to say about it because...it's just great!
Cinderella (Anna Kendrick) and her Prince (Chris Pine)
Yay for these two! I simply can't look at a picture of either of these actors without getting unnecessarily excited because they both seem so great. Images of these two in costume have already been circulating the internet for awhile, but like I said, it's always great to see Anna Kendrick and Chris Pine.
The Baker (James Corden) and the Baker's Wife (Emily Blunt)
What are they looking at so intently? Well, since I've seen the musical I have some ideas, but I don't want to spoil anything! Emily looks stunning as always in this mixed-print dress and James Corden is totally killing this leather jacket look, as a baker I was expecting more of a flour covered apron like we saw in the trailer. Either way, I'm excited!
So now we have a better idea of what some of these character's costumes look like. Aside from Johnny's suit which I just have confused, lukewarm feelings for, I'm loving each of these looks. With director Rob Marshall (Chicago) on board I'm sure it's going to be amazing.
