James Gunn was already announced as writer/director for the sequel when Guardians of the Galaxy first hit in August. Now, in a recent interview, he dropped some hints as to where the story will be taken:
It’s going to be a really surprising open. What happens is all the characters are killed in the first 10 minutes. In really horribly brutal fashion".
Yes, he was just joking. However, he did add something else:
I spent all day on Aug. 1, the day the first movie was released, writing Guardians. I was so excited about it and I was finally able to let go of the last one and begin the second one. I always saw this as a universe, not just as one story.”
Furthermore, he added (and we don’t have a quote on that, unfortunately) that some questions which were left unanswered from the first film will find a resolve in the sequel.
Obviously, this must have been a hint at Peter Quill’s origins and who his real father was.
Another thing James Gunn also added (after making the joke about killing the major characters) was that new faces will be added to the team.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 arrives on the 28th of July 2017.
