One of the best things about Star Wars (and there are many) are the epic lightsaber duels that we've enjoyed throughout the six films. With [Star Wars: Episode VII](movie:711158) on the way, we expect to see more lightsaber goodness in it, for sure! But, for now, let's take a look back on all the Star Wars lightsaber duels so far:

Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. General Grievous (Revenge of the Sith - 2005)

Talk about a huge disappointment. This battle started very promising with Grievous yielding four lightsabers at the same time against Kenobi but the battle was very brief and it didn't amount to much. To make matters worse, Kenobi killed Grievous with a gun! So uncivilized!

Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker vs. Count Dooku (Attack of the Clones - 2002)

Another exciting battle that was too short! While the action is good, both Obi-Wan and Anakin are ill-equipped to battle Dooku and Anakin's rash (read: stupid) decision of wanting to battle him alone just makes matters that much worse. It was good that Yoda was just around the corner, now wasn't it?

Obi Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker vs. Count Dooku, part 2 (Revenge of the Sith - 2005)

This is also a short battle but it gets extra 'oomph' because it gets Anakin closer to the dark side. And while Kenobi gets knocked unconscious in the very beginning, the duel between Anakin and Dooku is quite thrilling.

Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Darth Vader (A New Hope - 1977)

Perhaps this can be argued to be the worst and slowest fight of the entire saga... but the fact that it introduced the lightsaber duel to the world just can't be denied. Plus, the emotional send-off at the end is perfect.

Yoda vs. Count Dooku (Attack of the Clones - 2002)

This sequence is the highlight of the entire film since we had a chance of seeing Master Yoda be a total badass before his days on Dagobah. ILM did a great job with him as he moves fluidly and gracefully against Dooku. A superb fight indeed.

Mace Windu vs. Chancellor Palpatine (Revenge of the Sith - 2005)

This is a wonderful fight between two heavyweights of the force. Despite the ridiculous notion that three Jedi masters are discarded like Padawans, Windu and Palpatine go head-to-head. This fight also marks the turning point for Anakin. Not only does it feature an action-packed duel but it began to signal the beginning of the end for the Jedis and the birth of Darth Vader.

Yoda vs. Emperor Palpatine (Revenge of the Sith - 2005)

While the main focus was the epic duel between Anakin and Obi-Wan, the battle between Yoda and The Emperor was no slouch as the two maximum leaders of opposite sides had an intense and gripping fight that even destroyed the senate chamber.

Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Darth Maul (The Phantom Menace - 1999)

The Phantom Menace is a very problematic film but if there's something good about it, it's the climatic duel between Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan vs. Darth Maul. Fast-paced, action-packed and featuring an awesome double-bladed lightsaber, this scene remains the high point of the movie.

Luke Skywalker vs. Darth Vader (Return of the Jedi - 1983)

The climatic scene of Return of the Jedi may not feature the most skilled duel but it is certainly crucial as Luke gets tempted by the dark side and is fighting for his survival and, ultimately for his father's soul. The duel may not be as fast-paced or gripping as the prequel trilogy duels but the stakes have never been higher.

Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Anakin Skywalker (Revenge of the Sith - 2005)

The hype surrounding this battle was huge and thankfully, Lucas delivered an intensely gripping fight that shattered Obi-Wan and Anakin's friendship forever. The duel is fantastic as it moves at high speed and does not allow anyone to breathe. Both Obi-Wan and Anakin are equals and their struggle to defeat each other is not only thrilling to see but also emotionally devastating.

Luke Skywalker vs. Darth Vader (The Empire Strikes Back - 1980)

The best lightsaber duel comes from the best film of the saga. Not only does it feature stirring action but it also has repercussions that are felt until the very end of Return of the Jedi. Luke gets humiliated by Vader and after cutting his hand, Vader reveals he is Luke's father. This is the scene that cemented Star Wars as one of the best cinematic creations in history.
