Today in cosplay excellence, I'm celebrating the good news of a resurrection of an old favorite.

You might have heard about the Static web series development:

Writer/producer/director Reginald Hudlin (Best Picture Oscar nominee for producing Django Unchained) leads the creative team behind a live-action adaptation of Static Shock, featuring the African-American super hero Static, aka Virgil Ovid Hawkins. Static Shock is based on the Static comic co-created by the late Dwayne McDuffie with co-writer Robert L. Washington III and artist John Paul Leon, which was originally published by the DC Comics imprint Milestone Comics and, later, by DC Comics. Milestone Media co-founder/comic book artist/TV producer Denys Cowan (the original Static Shock animated series) is collaborating with Hudlin on the new Static Shock

There's been some rumor-chatter of Jaden Smith playing the titular role - which would be great! But I'm not here to discuss celebrity casting rumors. I'm all about cosplay and amazing content created by fans!

So I was lucky to come across an amazing cosplayer named Tony Ray who has the look down, and reportedly wants the role as well.

I first heard about Tony Ray on another cosplayer's blog, Jay Justice. I'm grateful for the pics and info, and pretty inclined to agree with what she had to say:

As you may have heard, Warner Bros has announced an upcoming live action “Static Shock” series. As longtime fans of the late Dwayne McDuffie’s writing and characters, this is overwhelmingly exciting news. The first thought on my mind is who will be our new Virgil Hawkins.

I’m rooting for Tony Ray. I hope he can at least get an audition. Tony is an actor and costumer, and an avid Static fan for many years. Playing Static in this series is his dream. He would bring a love of the work and a dedication to the role that few could match. If you’d like to see him get a shot, feel free to share these images with the tag on any social media site you like. It’s early days and anything is possible, so we’re gonna dream big.

I think seeing a fan rise to the position of playing a beloved character would be amazing. But my primary directive here is to bring you guys cool cosplay pics, and I always deliver. Enjoy!
