Peter Jackson likes to go out with a bang, but he's scaling new heights with The Hobbit 3: The Battle Of The Five Armies, which will be his most operatic outing to date.

Jackson told Entertainment Weekly his plans for the series' end, which includes a whopping 45 minute battle sequence as the various factions of Middle Earth fight over the treasure of Erebor.

Jackson even provided this diagram, which doesn't make things much clearer:

You'll notice Jackson has again included some eagles swooping in, just like in the finale of the Lord of The Rings trilogy. But have no fear, Jackson isn't about to play copycat:

Tolkien uses eagles in a way that can be kind of awkward because they tend to show up out of the blue and change things pretty quickly. So here they’re just part of the plan, not the saviors.

Either way, it's definitely going to be beyond the scale of anything we've seen yet from Jackson - which is saying something. The film lands December 17th.
