Over the past several months, Marvel has been in the development stages for their next big screen adventure Doctor Strange. As president Kevin Feige said, Marvel is going to develop a sequel to a well-known character and then introduce something new for the next few years. They are set to release Avengers Age of Ultron in May 2015 and bring in Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas in Ant-Man which will begin Marvel Phase 3 and is set for release in July 2015.
Speaking of Marvel Phase 3, we already know that Captain America 3 and Doctor Strange are set to be released in both May and July of 2016. And now we finally have our Stephen Strange. He is set to be portrayed by BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH!!!
Now we all know who Benedict Cumberbatch is. He is Sherlock Holmes in the BBC hit show Sherlock with Martin Freeman, Star Trek villain Khan Noonien Singh in 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness and the enormous dragon Smaug/The Necromancer in the epic Hobbit trilogy. He is set to reprise the roles in this holiday season's The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies.
Now his next big project is set to introduce the magical side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Dr. Stephen Strange and his magical powers. You guys may remember hearing Jasper Sitwell mention Strange in Captain America: The Winter Soldier as one of Zola's targets according to his algorithm for Project Insight as a threat to HYDRA some time in the future.
Now will this work? That is a question I had to ask myself. I think Yes. It will work. Because Cumberbatch may pull off being a superhero for the first time. And yes he was Khan on Star Trek already. So we may want to see his heroic side now. I totally think that Marvel can pull off using Cumberbatch as the Master of Magic in the Marvel Cinematic Universe here. Come 2016, I think Cumberbatch will do great!!! And there is no confirmed villain for him to fight yet. But I hear it may be Baron Mordo. And no actor has been cast yet.
What do you guys think about Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange? Let me know your thoughts below in the comments.
