During the summer, Adam McKay was believed to be the new director of Ant-Man before Marvel Studios decided to go with Peyton Reed instead. McKay stayed on the project to help with re-writes and now it seems that he might have the opportunity to direct a new film for Marvel Studios. In an interview with Crave Online, Adam McKay talked about taking meetings with Marvel for a possible directing gig.
“I’m starting to get into the early stages with Marvel.” McKay continued, "I just did a big rewrite on Ant-Man with Paul Rudd and had such a great time working with them that we’re kicking around ideas. But yeah, maybe I would take on one of the characters so we haven’t locked in anything, but discussions are definitely going on."
So here a few possibilities Adam McKay could land for Marvel.
There's some speculation that Adam McKay might take on a live-action version of She-Hulk, namely because he's one of the producers of the NBC comedy Bad Judge, so there's some interest in a court-procedural film out there. I actually don't think Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk would work as a movie, but rather a TV show, maybe on Netflix. But I wouldn't mind seeing She-Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Hawkeye needs some serious attention in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He had a walk-on cameo in the first Thor movie and was a mindless henchman for Loki in The Avengers. While he had a few shining moments in The Avengers, it's high time Marvel and Disney do something more with Hawkeye and Jeremy Renner. Hawkeye's recent comic book storyline would be something to see on the big screen, if only to have something more character driven rather than action heavy for a Marvel movie.
When John C. Reilly was cast as Rhomann Dey in Guardians of the Galaxy, many fans thought it was strange that an actor like John C. Reilly was joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although he was great in the cosmic movie, you don't cast John C. Reilly for an extended cameo role. If Marvel plans to make a standalone movie with the entire Nova Corps, I can easily see someone like Adam McKay directing the movie. Reilly and McKay have worked together before in movies such as Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, and Step Brothers.
The third movie Thor movie is still up in the air and it's believed that Thor 3 would pop up somewhere in Phase Three. Marvel has a penchant for hiring comedy and/or TV directors to make their movies like the Russo Brothers and Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Alan Taylor and Thor: The Dark World. So I can see Marvel hiring Adam McKay to direct Thor 3, if he passed on Ant-Man earlier this year.
There are numerous rumors and speculation about an Inhumans movie, but it's unclear whether or not the would-be movie would be part of Phase Three. Again, Marvel has a way about pairing directors with unlikely projects, so Adam McKay and The Inhumans is as unlikely as they come. So maybe Will Ferrell can play Black Bolt?
