Just when you thought Marvel couldn't reveal anymore major news, the studios surprises moviegoers yet again. Though Marvel revealed the first trailer to Avengers: Age of Ultron and have all but confirmed Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, the studio continued to excite fans today. Marvel held a major press event where they announced what has been on every Marvel fans mind: Phase 3. So far, moviegoers and fans have only known that Phase 3 would feature Ant-Man, which hits theaters next July. However, the next lineup had been all but unknown; that was until today. In a daring move (likely to counter WB's announcement about DC Comics) Marvel has revealed there entire movie lineup from now to 2019. The schedule is as followed:
1.Captain America: Civil War- May 6, 2016
2. Doctor Strange- November 4, 2016
3. Guardians of the Galaxy 2- May, 5, 2017
4. Thor: Ragnarok- July, 28, 2017
5. Black Panther- November 3, 2017
6. Avengers: Infinity War Part 1- May 4, 2018
7. Captain Marvel- July 6, 2018
8. Inhumans- November 2, 2018
9. Avengers: Infinity War Part 2- May 3, 2019
So many will be pleased to know that Phase 3 has finally been revealed. This list alone is enough to make headlines and I could easily leave it here and let start interpreting for yourselves. However, with everything that Marvel announced, these were the points that struck me as the most interesting and compelling. It could be a movie or a details, but these are the top stories from Marvel Studios' Phase 3 event.
Captain America is now Captain America: Civil War
We've known that Captain America 3 was coming, and we found out that Marvel Studio had been recently planning to bring the Civil War storyline to their Cinematic Universe. Well now we can confirm that Civil War is coming to the MCU, but not in the way that I thought as Captain America 3 is now [Captain America: Civil War](movie:994409). What does this mean for the next installment in Captain America's solo film? Will we be seeing a lot of Iron Man, and what does this mean for the Winter Soldier? These are just some things I'm wondering about Civil War? Well, whether this will be a major story for Phase 3 or just play out in this film, one things is certain: war is coming to the MCU.
Thor 3: Ragnarok is confirmed!
I supposed it was no surprised that Thor 3 was going to be a part of Marvel's Phase 3. Yet now we can paints a better picture of the Mighty Avenger's next adventure as coming to 2017 is [Thor: Ragnarok](movie:956858). Ragnarok will see the return of Chris Hemsworth as Thor; as well as Tom Hiddleston as Loki. This may not be the most shocking highlight from Marvel, but it was expected for the Thor story to continue. Though, Thor's next film may signify the end of Asgard, but will it be the end of Thor? The only to find that is heading to the theater come July 2017.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 moved to May 2017
Guardians of the Galaxy made a major impact this year. So it was only natural that Marvel would be all in for taking the Guardians the next level. At Comic-Con, it was announced that [Guardians of the Galaxy 2](movie:1081113) would be hitting theaters on July 2017. However that is no longer the case as Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will be hitting theaters on May 5, 2017. This move for Guardians 2 not only keeps Marvel's May release, but the Guardians opening the summer shows that the studio has a lot of faith in this property. It is interesting to see how what was once an unknown property from Marvel has become such a major player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Captain Marvel/Inhumans coming to theaters
Speaking of wild cards, it seems that Marvel has two more up their sleeves. Two films that have circled around in rumor are now official: Captain Marvel and Inhumans. Though little is known about these two films, the fact that Marvel is creating a Captain Marvel; not to mention the Inhumans. These two properties will not doubt bring something different to the MCU, such as having the first superheroine movie from Captain Marvel and just having a film on the Inhumans. Plus both of these films bridge the gap of the Avenger two-parter. It will be very interesting to see what Marvel does with these two properties and how they play out in the MCU.
Chadwick Boseman is Black Panther
Black Panther is coming. Not only is [Black Panther](movie:9047) hitting theaters in 2017, but the character has been cast. From the event, Marvel revealed that Chadwick Boseman will dawning the title of Black Panther. From this casting, it leaves me to believe that Boseman will be playing a younger T'Challa who will not only take up the role as leader of Wakanda, but take up the Black Panther mantle. Black Panther will certainly bring new elements for Marvel, and it definitely shows with the casting of Chadwick Boseman.
Avengers: Infinity War!
That is all that really needs to be said. Marvel's major event will be so massive, that the studio needs two films to implement the upcoming Infinity War. While breaking up a movie into two parts is not an usual move for a studio (look at what WB is doing with Justice League), it will be interesting to see how Marvel handles this trope with the next Avengers film. To be honest, it is not shocking to see that Marvel Studios has broken Infinity War into two parts. These films will be culmination of a lot of things from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movies may not just have the Avengers, but the Guardians of the Galaxy could show up; and lets not forget the new characters coming to the MCU in Phase 3. We have a lot of time between and 2018-2019, but lets hope that Infinity War is indeed 8 years in the making.
There is no doubt a lot to process from Marvel's announcement and there is certainly a lot to be excited for. Whether you are excited for the third Avengers film or for the Inhumans movie, it is good to know that Phase 3 is now laid in front of us and all starts with Ant-Man.
