When Jurassic Park was released in 1993 it created a whole new generation of dinosaur lovers. Despite the fact that the whole film (and its sequels) center on dinosaurs destroying everything and anything that stands in their way, we couldn't get enough.
As a kid there were two particular characters that I loved: Lex and Tim Murphy, the two lucky grandchildren of John Hammond who got a sneak peek of Jurassic Park before anyone else:
Lex, played by Ariana Richards, and Tim, played by Joseph Mazzello, were just 12 and 10 years old when they starred in the Steven Spielberg directed blockbuster which would take the world by storm, and spawn (soon to be) three sequels.
Lex and Tim faced many trials during their time on Isla Nublar: many of their companions were eaten by dinosaurs, they had to outwit a couple of extremely clever girls in a kitchen, hack a computer system, and finally, flee for their lives.
At least they got to hang with Dr. Alan Grant, right?
But what happened to Lex and Tim after the terrifying events of Jurassic Park?
Ariana and Joseph both continued to act through the 90s, and even reprized their roles as the Murphy siblings for a brief appearance in the 1997 sequel The Lost World: Jurassic Park. But what about these days?
Where is Lex now?
21 years after the release of Jurassic Park, Ariana Richards still acts - on occasion. She last appeared in the 2013 TV movie Battledogs, and 2007 film 5-25-77. She still fondly remembers her time on Jurassic Park, in a 2013 interview with KATU News she reminisced about Steven Speilberg talking to her on set:
One time Steven came up to me and said "Ariana, you get to such a point of complete terror, and we see it written all over your face, I mean how do you get to that level of fear....Wait, wait, wait, I don't want to know!" and then he walked away
But despite her fond memories, her real passion is another type of creative art: painting.
Richards earned a degree in Fine Art and Drama and is currently living in Salem, Massachusetts where she is an award winning artist. The 35-year-old often paints landscapes and figures, and, although her paintings are usually devoid of dinosaurs, it hasn't stopped Steven Spielberg from hanging one of her artworks in his office! Check out her artwork here.
Where is Tim now?
Like his onscreen sister, Joseph Mazzello has also kept on acting into adulthood with consistent film and television roles, in part due to Steven Speilberg. Mazello explained to People.com:
Steven wrote me a recommendation for USC to go to film school. Believe it or not, I got in...He's been there for me throughout my life whenever I really needed him.
In 2010, the friendship came full circle as Mazzello appeared in the war miniseries The Pacific as Eugene Sledge, a series which Steven Spielberg executive produced. Check out this awesome reunion:
Recently, Joseph appeared as Dustin Moskovitz in The Social Network and [G.I. Joe: Retaliation](movie:41694) alongside Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis. But it looks like Mazello's talents extend to behind the camera also, with two director's credits to his name! His latest film Undrafted is currently in post production - It looks like all that time with Steven Spielberg must have rubbed off!
It's great to hear that Ariana and Joseph are still around and doing awesome things! But no matter how much time has passed, to me they'll always be the resourceful kids escaping a kitchen full of Raptors, check it out for old times' sake:
