Vampires are an ancient part of our culture, with some examples of vampirism prevalent in most world cultures. In modern times, vampires are usually snarling movie monsters, or the handsome, tortured youths of Twilight and The Vampire Diaries.

However, the most fearsome blood-drinkers of all are all too real. Some of the sickest and most depraved crimes ever committed were by deranged serial killers who - for whatever reason their own twisted logic came up with - decided to drink human blood.

Warning: these terrifying real life vampires may give you nightmares...

1. Richard Chase - 'The Vampire of Sacramento'

Victims: 6

Lived: 1950 - 1980, California

Vampire Crimes: Like a mythical vampire, Chase would roam the streets trying front doors, taking an unlocked door as an invitation to come in. His most shocking crime came when he killed two little boys, drinking the blood of his 6-year-old victim. When he was institutionalized for injecting himself with rabbit blood, staff referred to him as 'Dracula.'

Insane Fact: Chase would put cola and animal innards in a blender and drink the vile mixture 'to stop his brain from shrinking.'

2. Marcelo de Andrade - 'The Vampire of Niterói'

Victims: 14

Lived: 1967, caught 1991, Brazil

Vampire Crimes: Andrade raped and killed 14 boys aged 6 - 13, before subjecting their corpses to intercourse after death. He drank the blood of his victims so he could 'become as beautiful as them.'

Insane Fact: A staff member at the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, Andrade claimed bizarre religious motives for his crimes, saying:

I preferred young boys because they are better looking and have soft skin. And the priest said that children automatically go to heaven if they die before they’re thirteen. So I know I did them a favor by sending them to heaven.

3. Daniel and Manuela Ruda

Victims: 1

Lived: apprehended 2002 in Bochum, Germany

Vampire Crimes: The Rudas, aged only 26 and 23, lured colleague Frank Hackert to their apartment, where they stabbed him 66 times and drank his blood. They stashed his bloodied carcass in the coffin that Manuela liked to sleep in, leaving a scalpel in his stomach and a pentagram etched into his chest.

Insane Fact: The Rudas' bizarre proclivities should have been visible in advance: Manuela engaged in 'bite parties' - vampire cult groups who met up to drink blood from 'willing donors.'

4. Philip Oyancha

Victims: 17, possibly more

Lived: Oyancha was tried for his crimes in 2012, Kenya

Vampire Crimes: Oyancha claimed to be under the influence of a strange vampiric cult when he killed and drank the blood of 17 women, saying that he was possessed by evil 'spirits.'

Insane Fact: Oyancha had a sick goal in mind when he began his crimes, saying, 'My target was to kill 100 women. I managed 17 and there were 83 to go.'

--------------------------------------

5. Fritz Haarmann - 'The Vampire of Hanover'

Victims: 27, more suspected

Lived: 1879 - 1925, Germany

Vampire Crimes: Haarmann raped and murdered 27 boys aged 10-22, selling their possessions and flesh on the black market. As he killed the youths, he would chew through their neck, drinking their blood in what he called a 'love bite.' His last words were 'I repent, but I do not fear death.'

Insane Fact: Göttingen medical school in Germany still own Haarman's head in a jar. Scientists hoped to learn more about murderers by studying the structure of Haarmann's vampire brain.

6. James P. Riva - 'The Schizophrenic Vampire'

Victims: 1

Lived: born 1957, apprehended 1981, Massachusetts

Vampire Crimes: Riva was only 23 when he shot his grandmother in her wheelchair. The heartless killer stabbed his poor relative in the heart many times before drinking her blood. He then set the house on fire in a paltry effort to destroy evidence.

Insane Fact: Riva had many bizarre and contradictory claims for his motive. He told prosecutors that he was a 700-year-old vampire, then changed his story to say that his grandmother was a vampire who fed on him when he was asleep.

7. Nicolas Claux - 'The Vampire of Paris'

Victims: 1+

Lived: born 1972, arrested 1994, France

Vampire Crimes: When police raided Claux's apartment, they found human remains and blood, which he'd stolen from a blood bank. Claux had access to dead bodies through his job as a mortician, stripping flesh from corpses to eat. He was convicted of one murder, but police suspect he may have committed more.

Insane Fact: Terrifyingly, Claux was released from prison in 2002. He now runs a website selling his dark-themed artwork, saying:

I have worked hard to improve myself through the development of artistic abilities. I cannot erase the past, but my goal is to channel the negativity that I have caused into pure creativity

------------------------------------------

Horrifying. I think I'll stick with Buffy the Vampire Slayer from now on...
