Hellraiser or no Hellraiser? That is the question. Well, the question for major horror fans for the last few years, anyhow.
However, Clive Barker just dropped some deets to EW while promoting the Director's Cut of his other classic, Nightbreed, and the results are... interesting. Barker said:
I think the phrase is ‘reboot,’ although I’ve never really understood what that meant. I wanted to make sure we sounded some fresh notes. The movie actually begins on Devil’s Island.
I wanted to fold into the Hellraiser narrative something about the guy—the Frenchman Lemarchand—who made the mysterious box, which raises Pinhead. I figured, ‘Well, what would have happened to him?’
He might well have been taken to Devil’s Island and I thought that would be a pretty cool place to start the movie. We’re waiting for Bob to come back to us and see when we’re going to actually make the movie.
Barker also said that he sent Bob Weinstein (the head of Dimension Films) his second draft screenplay for the new Hellraiser movie, so the wheels are definitely in motion of the upcoming Cenobitefest.
So, although Clive Barker calls the new Hellraiser a 'very loose' remake of the original, it seems that it will tread some familiar ground. What do you think of this, horror fans? Will it be interesting to learn more about the origins of the box or do you wish everything would be brand spanking shiny new Hellraiser?
