A couple months ago, Jessica Chastain talked about how she would love to play a superhero in a movie, and I wrote this little piece on who she would be best suited to take on.
Now, Chastain has spoken out again in an MTV interview, this time confirming that she has spoken with Marvel about a superhero role.
We’ve talked about aligning our forces in the future. And here’s the thing with me… If you’re going to be in a superhero movie, you only get one chance. You’re that character forever. So why do a superhero movie and play the boring civilian? Whatever it is, I want a fight scene. I could be an incredible villain. I could be a hero. I want a cool outfit, and I want to kick ass. There was thing...I don’t want to say too much – but there was one thing, there was a possibility in the future of the character becoming… And I was like, ‘I understand that, but I want to do it now.’
Given her apparent impatience to get going with the superhero genre, and the recent phase three announcements by Marvel, there aren't that many choices about who she could play.
One of the choices is Carol Danvers, now that a Captain Marvel movie is officially on the cards. However, when asked about that possibility, Chastain struck it down.
Yes I do know about that. Listen, that’s 2018. We don’t know where we’ll be, maybe I’ll give up acting by then.
Obviously, this could be a smokescreen; it wouldn't be the first time that an actor dodged a question about a role when they were actually fully aware that they would be taking it on (*cough* Jason Momoa). However, I'm still voting no, and not just because I really, really want Katee Sackhoff to be my Ms Marvel.
It's because when I first heard that Chastain wanted a superhero role, I immediately thought of Medusa. Now she is talking to Marvel, and the Inhumans movie is planned for 2018. What could make more sense?
In either case, I'm just thrilled to see that she is in talks with a studio, (even in very casual talks) because she is such a phenomenal actress, and I cannot wait to see her don a cape (metaphorically speaking) and join the Marvel-verse!
