Halo 5: Guardians isn't that far away, well, it's like over a year until it hits Xbox One...but still! Recently I've been looking back over the series and have come across some of the strangest easter eggs in the series. Now, of course, these appeared during the years that Master Chief resided with Bungie and 343 have taken him to a new beautiful home. But that doesn't mean that we can't look back right?
Allow me to show you the greatest easter egg I'd like to return from the Halo series. And if you're a fan of easter eggs, then you've got to check out this article on Bigfoot in GTA 6!
Halo 3 Monkey People
I find this extremely disturbing because I had no idea why the hell it was in the game. Perhaps it's a throwback to 2001: A Space Odyssey and how it explored our evolution in the future, I thought. Halo could be paying its respects to one of the giants of science fiction. But the faces are in fact explained!
My god, I really don't like these things. Can you imagine if this is how all faces were still rendered in games? Anyway, here is the insider backstory. The internal name for the 'cavemen' is "The Gorillehto". Originally an internal email prank, photoshopping Marcus Lehto's face on a female gorilla.
The teddy bear being held by the "Gorillehtos" in Sierra 117 bears the caricature of Christopher Carney, multiplayer lead. Originally the bear was to appear in Master Chief's cryochamber at the end of Halo 3, after finishing Legendary. He was to reach down and grab the bear as the door closed.
Want to see them in inaction?
They're not just part of the scenery, though -- you can't kill them, but if you shoot them they actually bleed (only real characters do that). Note that they all look exactly the same only in different sizes and they're not the only ones in the game, oh no!
A lone Monkey Man can be found in a different, much harder to reach part of the level (it's actually outside the game map and you can only get there by killing yourself and respawning in the right place). This one's hiding behind some bushes. Why the others have chosen to ostracise him remains unclear.
They're in more than one game, too. If you get to the end of Halo 3: ODST, sit through the credits and watch the final cut scene that comes afterward, you can actually move the camera to the left during the last few seconds and take a look around the spaceship. Guess who was sitting right there the whole time. Yep, another monkey man. Just chilling, staring at you, no big deal.
Of course, this is a Bungie specific joke with regards to the face that is planted upon these monkey men. But I personally would love to see someone in 343 pay homage to Bungie by sticking in their own monkey developer!
