E3 this year was packed full of surprises, and one that Kingdom Hearts fans really didn't see coming was the unveiling of the Kingdom Hearts 3 trailer, for all to enjoy. The trailer didn't have too much to reveal, like a release date or anything that solid, aside from the fact that Sora was returning with a host of some great new moves, accompanied by graphical improvements. But what did the trailer hold within?
What kind of secrets did Square Enix conceal beneath this seemingly plain and simple trailer? For those of you that haven't found out already, I'm going to take a look at what secrets and plot details were hidden beneath this deceptive trailer. Naturally, there will be plenty of spoilers ahead!!
E3 Trailer for Kingdom Hearts 3
So let's begin with the opening, a very good place to start (did I really just include a Sound of Music reference?). All the opening really reveals is scenes from the other Kingdom Hearts games, which naturally leads us to conclude that Kingdom Hearts 3 will continue the narrative thread exposed in the other titles. Wonderful! We'd kinda guessed that already...
Though one of the quotes that overlap with the opening are in fact taken from the secret ending of Birth by Sleep, which demonstrates our beloved Sora's dedication to heroics as he fought hard to rescue the protagonist from the PSP game. But where will we be picking up from at the release date?
When things get interesting is when we arrive with Sora onto a beach on the Shore of Destiny islands and the Keyblade is revealed, something which had fans screaming at E3. What's interesting about this Keyblade though, is that it is actually the Master Keeper.
The Master Keeper originally belonged to Master Eraqus, in Birth by Sleep, but was passed on to Aqua who utilized its power to transform the destroyed Land of Departure into Castle Oblivion, in order to protect Ventus. Obviously if you don't know these characters this will make no sense, and I really don't have time to explain everything unfortunately. Just play the games again, always a pleasure anyway!!
So with all of this background knowledge here, the question remains: how did it end up with Sora? The last time that we saw the Master Keeper it was with Aqua in the World of Darkness. How exactly did it arrive on these islands, and what made it select Sora? Naturally, the Keyblade has only been used by Keyblade Masters, which Sora is not! Also, why is Sora even at Destiny Islands in the first place?
This could hint that Sora will return there after his run in with the Spirit Dream Eaters. Though this remains to be seen. Square Enix certainly made sure that this trailer had some real teasers hidden within that only fans of the series would be aware of.
The second piece of information we get comes in the form of the second area: Twilight Town. This area is naturally a vital area concerning the lore of Kingdom Hearts. Therefore, due to the prominence of this area in the titles, little can be analyzed as to why it is appearing in this game. Though it may hint at the timeline of the game, which looks like Kingdom Hearts 3 will be taking place after Dream Drop Distance, as Sora is still wearing his outfit from Kingdom Hearts 2.
A lot of people were wondering why the graphics of Kingdom Hearts 3 didn't seem to have massive improvements, when compared with the Final Fantasy series. This appears to be the case because Square Enix wish to maintain the classical art style of the series, which mimics that of Disney. It's great to see that the developers wish to maintain the iconic style of the games, even with the powerful Unreal Engine 4 powering the game.
The other piece of information that the game offers up comes in the form of its HUD. The command menu HUD shows four possible options (in Japanese), one of which is just a question mark. The other three translate into Attack, Magic and Items respectively. This assuredly links the game with the combat style we loved in Kingdom Hearts 2, as opposed to the style adopted in Dream Drop Distance or Birth by Sleep.
But what is the question mark concealing? Could it be the return of the Drive Forms? Also on the bottom right of the screen we see pictures of both Donald and Goofy, so we know that they will return anyway, though unfortunately they are not hidden away in the trailer. Also, the way in which Sora navigates the game looks like the Flow Motion system from Dream Drop Distance, a little bit toned down, though it could certainly be a feature.
This could mean that we'll be bouncing off walls and enemies in Kingdom Hearts 3. Sora seems to be far more agile in the next installment, which leads me to think that this going to be a seriously fast paced action game. Also, the size of the swarm chasing Sora hints at the larger degrees of enemies that will feature in this game. Sounds like a welcome addition!
So what do you think will be appearing in Kingdom Hearts 3? Were these features from the other games really hinted at in the E3 trailer? Let me know in the comments!
