Good news Nintendo zealots, because the much underrated surrealist adventure The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is being rereleased on Nintendo 3DS and will arrive spring 2015!

Fantastic!

Majora's Mask finds Link stuck in a Groundhog Day-style time loop as he relives the same harrowing three days spent trying to save the world of Termina from a terrifying, angry moon that is slowly working its way towards the planet.

Celestial creep.
Celestial creep.

Majora's Mask is by far the darkest tale ever to grace Zelda canon and, like any Zelda game, is packed to the brim with emotional moments. So, in honor of the rerelease of Majora's Mask, I'm gonna list my top five (in no particular order) most emotional moments from The Legend Of Zelda. Get ready for tears and spoilers! Mostly spoilers...

Death Of The Great Deku Tree (Ocarina Of Time)

Gets me every time.
Gets me every time.

Ocarina of Time was the first Zelda game I ever played and still stands as my absolute favorite (and first time inside a tree). After attaining the Kokiri Sword, Deku Shield and getting to grips with Deku Nuts and Sticks, it's off to the Great Deku Tree's meadow to see what's up with him/it.

The tree is a true spectacle and its death came as a real downer for me. The passing of the torch from wise elder to a young upstart that likes to sleep in resonated with me - how the hell am I supposed to tackle the world without an elder's guidance? With much tribulation, that's how! (gif via coffeencakes)

The Cleansing Of Hyrule (Wind Waker)

What a guy.
What a guy.

The King of Red Lions, Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule's ultimate sacrifice, comes as a naturally memorable one. Getting to the Triforce before the evil Ganondorf and simply wishing for a future filled with prosperity, the King chooses to perish with his submerged kingdom instead of heading off in search of new lands with Link and Zelda.

The Theft Of Epona And The Ocarina Of Time (Majora's Mask)

"Clever girls"
"Clever girls"

So imagine you're Link. You've just survived the Ocarina of Time and are casually riding Epona through a pretty grim looking forest when your trusty steed is startled by fairies and your precious Ocarina is stolen from you by some creepy Skull Kid. What an epic start to a great game!

But what really got me was when you gave chase and Link ends up falling down that dark chasm, eventually waking up in the horrid Termina, is he dead? Did he fall to his death and wake up in a parallel purgatory?

Leaving The Kokiri Forest (Ocarina Of Time)

Growing pains
Growing pains

I can't even. Your mind is set on avenging The Great Deku Tree as Link bounds out of Kokiri Forest, not stopping, if you're like me, to listen to any of the Kokiri's generic babble. Then boom, heartstrings, Saria appears on the bridge like the ghost of childhood, all somber and heartfelt. This really is it. This'll be the last time we see each other.

She hands over the Fairy Ocarina, teaches you her iconic song and you disappear out of her life foreverrr. For seven years at least (I felt the need for a bit of dramatics).

The Deku Butler's Son (Majora's Mask)

"Some of these trees were my friends!"
"Some of these trees were my friends!"

The Deku Butler's missing son is a tale of such sorrow. His soul resides within the Deku Mask, which Link uses to transform into Deku Link, and his body became a twisted and grotesque tree in the passage between Termina and Hyrule.

What really gets me about this is when the Deku Butler leads you to the Mask Of Scents and apologizes for being too fast, because Link reminds him of his missing son. You've got the mask knowing his soul is embedded in it and that is the way of it. There will be no resolution for the Deku Butler, he will forever wonder what happened to his little boy.

Choked Up?

So get your 3DS' at the ready and pay your respects to one of gaming's greatest franchises. I cannot wait for the WiiU Legend Of Zelda and hope that Nintendo continues with its solid tradition of great emotional storytelling. We're all very lucky to have such a fantastic lore to pull memories from. Feel free to comment on your most emotional Zelda moments in the comments!
