It’s rare for Nintendo to trust one of their staple franchises to another developer. It’s even rarer to see [The Legend of Zelda](movie:988445)a as anything other than an action role playing game. So when Hyrule Warriors was announced as a cross over between Zelda and Dynasty warriors it was pretty obvious that I was excited.

So just to make things clear for everyone, Hyrule Warriors is non-canon Zelda. That means you don’t need to worry about the super confusing timeline in order to understand just where this game sits. That being said the games story does take elements from many of the different timelines. Most notable of which is the reincarnation process of the hero Link as well as the different fan favourite characters.

The basic set up is that a group of baddies are trying to wreak havoc amongst the Zelda universe by stealing the Triforce and using this power to open multidimensional portals called soul gates. This basically allows for a crossover story line between all of the big names in the Zelda universe. Sure Link, Zelda, Impa and Sheik are of the Hyrule Warriors timeline but the other characters like Princess Ruto, Midna, Agitha, Fi, Ghirahim, and Zhant are all from Twilight princess, Ocarina of time and Skyward sword. It’s not the deepest narrative around but it does serve its purpose as a means of progression. Plus this is a Warriors game who really cares about story.
