Overwatch is an aesthetically beautiful, fun, action packed, multiplayer shooter. Blizzard showcased this surprise Pixar-esque video for Overwatch, and we additionally have gameplay footage for you to get lost in.
In a time of global crisis, an international task force of soldiers, scientists, adventurers, and oddities known as Overwatch came together to restore peace to a war-torn world. After many years, the group's influence waned, and it was eventually disbanded. Overwatch might be gone now...but the world still needs heroes.
Overwatch is a "pick-up-and-play" FPS. Blizzard wants to cater to the "easy-to-learn, hard-to-master" mantra. Overwatch is set in the future, here on Earth, with a style and level of design taken straight out of the cinema.
"With every new Blizzard game, we look at our favorite aspects of a genre and put our own spin on things," Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime said in a statement. "Our goal with Overwatch is to create an awesome FPS experience that’s more accessible to a much wider audience while delivering the action and depth that shooter fans love."
What's truly awesome about this game is the number of playable characters and the varied abilities they possess. The 'heroes' of Overwatch each bring their own distinct weapons and 'superabilities' to bear, allowing players to cater to their own play style. For example take a look at these four bad asses below.
A former British test pilot who shrugs at danger, can execute impossible acrobatic assaults (thanks to her ability to teleport), drop energy bombs, and even reverse time.
A hulking German soldier in battle armor, can charge great distances and pin his enemies to a wall or slam the ground with his rocket hammer to knock them off their feet.
A bow-wielding Japanese mercenary, has the ability to scale walls with his bare hands, fire off a tracking device that illuminates nearby enemies for his team, and unleash a huge spirit dragon that does grievous damage to all enemies in its path.
An Indian architect, manipulates light and energy to shield her allies and damage her enemies--and she can turn the tide of any battle by building a device that instantly transports her teammates to the front lines.
"Overwatch is our take on a vibrant, near-future universe with amped-up characters and action-packed team-based gameplay," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "Our goal with Overwatch is to create an awesome FPS experience that's more accessible to a much wider audience while delivering the action and depth that shooter fans love."
Originally another title entirely
Originally coined 'Titan,' Blizzard wanted to create an all new gaming experience for its fans, according to Blizzard's Chris Metzen, the shift in ideas during the development of Titan eventually morphed into an entirely new game.
"We [Blizzard] decided internally to go another way," said Metzen. "What really happened was we decided to go this way. Overwatch is a very different game than what we were planning to build."
Metzen claims there's a spiritual continuity between Titan and Overwatch, and some of the ideas used in the FPS are borrowed from the canceled sci-fi MMO.
There is a PC beta for Overwatch planned for 2015. When asked about the possibility of it coming to consoles, the team vaguely suggested they'd like it to be played in multiple places, saying "We would love to see Overwatch played on whatever it can be played on." You can sign up to the Beta now! Over at Blizzards website.
Ready to see Overwatch's characters in action? Including stealth snipers, gorillas wearing armor and masked mercenaries engaging in firefights. Overwatch appears to be heavily focused on action and gunplay, with characters teleporting mid-gunfight and others using grappling guns to move quickly through a clean futuristic environment.
Movement in Overwatch looks fast, with quick grappling mechanics, teleporting and flying, as well as ground traversal. The game appears to use a blend of magic and technology, with robots that transform into turrets fighting alongside spell-casting supporting heroes. Cool huh?
