Sadly, despite cannibalism being one of the most truly shocking acts a person can commit, it keeps happening. Even worse, it seems that cases of real life cannibalism have been on the rise in recent years.

Recently in Wales, UK a man ate a woman's eyeball in an attack that newspapers have compared to notorious movie cannibal Hannibal Lecter. Read on about this shocking case and more horrifying cases of real life cannibalism.

Be warned, these will leave even the most die-hard horror fan feeling queasy...

2014: Argoed, UK

On November 6th security at the Sirhowy Arms Hotel in South Wales burst into a room after a commotion was reported. Shockingly, they found Matthew Williams, 34 - who had only been released from prison two weeks previously - eating a woman's eyeball and face.

A local from the area said:

This animal was eating this girl to death... when they opened his door he was eating her face. He murdered her so police stopped him – good on them.

The woman, who Williams had only met a few hours prior to the vicious attack, died of her injuries. Her attacker was tasered by police and also died shortly afterwards.

On May 26th, 2012, 31-year-old Rudy Eugene attacked homeless man Ronald Poppo beside a thronging Miami highway, chewing off the 65-year-old's face.

Many frantic witnesses dialed 911, with one caller telling an emergency operative;

Listen, there is a naked man on the MacArthur Causeway. He is beating another man to a pulp – like on top of the man, beating him, the man is bleeding. He's going to kill that man, I promise you.

Eugene was fatally shot by police when they intervened to stop the violent cannibalistic attack. The drug MDPV (or bath salts) was originally blamed for sending Eugene into a frenzy, though toxicology reports ruled this out.

2014: West Delray, FL

Despite being only 5"6, Tony Grein stepped up when a naked, 6"3, 250lb crazy man started attacking his little sister outside their home in West Delray, Florida in February. For intervening, 18-year-old Tony was savagely bitten across the face.

Grein was actually the third person that the naked man, Anesson Joseph, 28, attacked on his cannibalistic rampage, which was only ended when cops shot and took him down. Witness Robert Friskney described the horrific scene:

Honestly, it was like watching a movie. It was so surreal. I just couldn't believe what I was watching... the only thing I could think about was getting home to make sure my wife and kids were safe and to make sure they knew I was safe.

Terrifying. Let's hope that incidents like these are not repeated. Things as horrible as cannibalism should only appear in movies!
