Developers Blizzard Entertainment have long since been planning a movie tie-in to their exceptionally successful Warcraft series, and after much speculation they've finally announced who'll be starring in it!

The expansive Warcraft fantasy universe spans multiple platforms and genres, providing the setting for real-time strategy games, collectible card games, comic books, novels, tabletop games, and now a film!

However, what is by far Blizzard's most successful product - and largely the reason for the upcoming film's hot anticipation - is the massively multiplayer online game, World of Warcraft. WOW caused a phenomenon amongst the video game community when it launched back in 2004 and has dominated the MMO market ever since. It has been so insanely popular that, according to Blizzard, over 100 million accounts had been created as of January 2014. Not only that, WOW is listed by Business Insider as the highest grossing video game of all time!

So What's the Movie About?

The film is based loosely around the video game series and is set to tell the origin story behind the initial conflict between the humans and the orcs. Set in Azeroth, the narrative will follow the heroic Alliance side as they face the insidious forces of the evil Horde. It's no wonder then that many gamers are expecting a lot from the film, and after reading the newly revealed cast list I'm officially one of them! Here's who's set to bring these video game characters to life...

Travis Fimmel as Anduin Lothar

It was already known that Travis Fimmel - of Vikings fame - would have a role in the film, but now he's been confirmed as the leader of the Alliance, Anduin Lothar.

Dominic Cooper as King Llane Wrynn

British actor Dominic Cooper (Mamma Mia!, Captain America) will star as the leader of the human kingdom of Stormwind, King Llane Wrynn. Looks like he's going to have to bulk up a little for the role!

Paula Patton as Garona

The Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol actress will be transformed into a morally ambiguous orc for the role of Garona.

Ben Foster as Medivh

Ben Foster, who appeared as Angel in X-Men: The Last Stand will play a crucial role in the Warcraft movie - in the game's fiction, Medivh is responsible for opening the Dark Portal, letting in the demonic forces of the Burning Legion. Whoops.

Tony Kebbell as Durotan

Toby Kebbell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) will play the leader of the Horde, Durotan.

Rob Kazinsky as Orgrim

Durotan's right hand man, Orgrim, will be portrayed by Rob Kazinsky from True Blood.

Daniel Wu as Gul’Dan

The Californian-born actor Daniel Wu has mostly made a name for himself in Asia. He'll be playing the orc shaman, Gul'Dan in the upcoming film.

Warcraft will also feature Clancy Brown (Starship Troopers) as the Horde's Warchief Blackhand, Ben Schnetzer (The Book Thief) as the mage Khadgar, and Ruth Negga (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) as the Alliance queen, Lady Taria.

In the games, players can choose whether to play as the Horde or the Alliance, so it will be interesting to see which side cinema audiences back!

So there you have it. Do you think these actors are the right choices for the source material?

The film is scheduled to be released by Universal on March 11, 2016.
