The entire zombie and apocalyptic genres are being seriously milked as of late. From the literary brilliance of The Road, the sensational design of The Last of us, to the lessening greatness of The Walking Dead and the appalling 4: 44 Last Day on Earth, the world is obsessed with exploring what happens when it all goes to hell.
Games are of course one particular art form that has really taken a shine to zombies. Let's face it, they're a lot of fun to kill! The next few months will show of a lot of zombie games on a lot of consoles, but which ones should we pay attention to? Which game should we invest our time and money into? With that, let's take a look at Dying Light, H1Z1 Dead Island 2 and Escape Dead Island!
Dying Light on PS4, Xbox One & PC
Dying Light is slated for release on January 27th for PS4, Xbox One and PC, unfortunately they cancelled the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. To me, it kind of looks like Mirror's Edge combined with Dead Island. The player can navigate the sides of small shacks and houses to avoid the streets below. There is a similar kicking system and most of your weapons appear to be melee.
It is has interesting day and night feature. During the day you have to navigate the South American slums to find weapons and materials for crafting and survival. The zombies are slow and can be easily ignored as you navigate the rooftops. Once night falls though, the infected become more dangerous and can navigate buildings just like you. Naturally they are not as good at parkour as you, but I do love the image of seriously impressive parkour zombies.
Though what I don't like the look of with this game is...well...the game, really. Sure the day and night feature is an interesting addition, but the game just looks like another zombie title that lets you mindlessly swing heavy objects at hoards of zombies. It appears devoid of innovation and reminds me too much of Dead Island, which got old very quickly. I don't think the inclusion of being able to run up a wall is going to help make this game all that interesting.
What about you guys? Do you like the look of Dying Light?
Escape Dead Island & Dead Island 2 for PS3, Xbox 360 & PC
Now we're talking; a little bit of innovation going on here! Escape Dead Island bridges the gap between the first two Dead Island games and Dead Island 2, helping to explain how the outbreak reaches Los Angeles. The game's story seems to be very interesting as the character explores whether what he's experiencing is actually happening or if it's all in his mind.
It's a third person mystery adventure game with a lot of puzzle solving involved, also the animation style is completely different from every other apocalyptic game out there! It's comic book style graphics are an interesting take on the zombie genre, allowing the developers to do some really insane stuff with the environments. One huge problem the Dead Island games have always had was how they ran. They are bug filled and generally very choppy in terms of frame rate.
Dead Island 2 really has no appeal for me whatsoever. It looks like Dying Light without the parkour elements. No thanks. This really doesn't seem to apply to Escape Dead Island at all though! I'm sure it's going to be a fun, crazy title that'll have a story that will at the very least keep us guessing. I'm looking forward to this one a bit more than Dying Light.
But it's the last zombie game that looks like the champion!
H1Z1 for PS4 & PC
That's more like it!! This is what a zombie game should be, all about survival. Also, I think that the PS4 and Sony could be getting the better exclusives again this generation, what do you think? H1Z1 is an open-world zombie survival game that combines many aspects of zombie survival game in the market today, from DayZ, 7 Days to Die and Rust (even though this is not a zombie survival game anymore). But that’s not all; to top it all off, they even included the massiveness of the map of Planetside 2! I'm with it already!
The game is an MMO that drops you into this enormous environment with nothing but the clothes on your back. Now your job is set: survive. You have to make your way around this landscape and gather materials that will aid in your survival. The zombies appear to be intelligent and will follow you for great distances if they spot you. You'll be left helpless at the outset of this intriguing title!
Gameplay emphasises multi-player cooperation, trading, and team-building. In an interview with Adam Clegg from SOE it was made clear that unlike other zombie MMO games, the main focus will be on surviving against the zombies through team-work with other players, instead of being a player versus player "PVP" environment with a zombie backdrop.
This sounds like a zombie title that's going to knock every other game out of the water! I can't wait to get my hands on H1Z1, unfortunately there's still no release date though. Could be a while yet!
