As if the creatures of the Potter universe weren't creepy enough, Warner Bros. Studios just released "Harry Potter: The Creature Vault: The Creatures and Plants of the Harry Potter Films" just in time for the holidays! In my opinion, it should have been released for the Halloween season because some of these creatures are ridiculously creepy! Complete with house elves, merpeople, pygmy puffs (I have one of those by the way, his name is Geoffrey :D), and dementors, the newest addition to the Potter book collection gives us an in-depth look at the birth of some of the wizarding universe's most iconic and strangest creatures.
My Pygmy Puff Geoffrey!
Seriously though! It's so incredible to see how a creature that started off as mere words on a page became a well-nigh tangible living being! The book even includes a behind-the-scenes look at the process of bringing Rowling's creatures to life for the films as well as an interactive Eeylops Owl Emporium catalog. I really wish I could actually order a pet from Eeylops!
Anywho, without further ado, I present to you a sneak peak of the super creepy creatures from the Potter world that will probably give you nightmares for the rest of your natural life...
Those intermediate stages of transformation look pretty rough...not that fully human Peter is much of a looker either...
The Hungarian Horntail
The final product actually seems to have remained pretty loyal to the original concept art. Although, seeing more spikes on the tail would have been pretty sweet and an added challenge for Harry (not that the Horntail wasn't hard enough to deal with in the first place...)
Kreacher the House Elf
And then, there's Kreacher... I never thought I would be able to say this, but it seems like the unfortunate looking creature turned out more aesthetically pleasing than originally intended. I think the movie rating might have had to be pushed to R if Kreacher ended up looking like the original concept art!
Arnold the Pygmy Puff
Who can result a pygmy puff! Even the naked pygmy puff is adorable! Unfortunately, this is one of the rare cases where I think the final product didn't quite do the original idea justice. Ginny's pygmy puff looks kind of like a pink demonic monkey pom pom thing...
The transformation of the dementors in particular fascinates me. Because there are two distinct versions of them in the concept art, we actually end up seeing both versions at some point in the film franchise. The first time we meet the dementors in Prisoner of Azkaban, they look very similar to the concept art on the left: a very grim reaper-esque look. However, as I'm sure many of you noticed, next time we get a good look at them (the Order of the Phoenix), they end up looking alot more like the concept art on the right: a decrepit, hoodless skeleton.
Also did anyone notice that the dementor in the concept art on the right has a vertebral tail...A TAIL. So. Stinkin. CREEPY!
The Mandrake (or Mandragora)
I'll just let Ms. Granger do the talking on this one: "Mandrake, or Mandragora is used to return those who have been petrified to their original state."
Definitely does not look like this little guy will be singing "Part of Your World" any time soon!
And there you have it folks, some of the concept art that led up to the creatures we now know and love/dread! As cool as all this is, I'm probably not going to be able to sleep for the next 5 days...
Which is the creepiest Potter creature you've seen so far?
