Film icon and horror legend Dario Argento has been off the scene for a while. He's not directed a movie since 2012's [Dracula 3D](movie:1122056) and before that, 2009's Giallo. The man's been in the business of making movies since before most of us were born, but since his output has slowed considerably in the past decade or so, it's even more exciting when he announces a new project.
This time, it's The Sandman (not to be confused with the Neil Gaiman graphic novel adaptation currently in development), and judging from the synopsis, it sounds like it's going to be great:
THE SANDMAN tells the story of Nathan, a young student in the city who struggles to forget his childhood trauma at the hands of the serial killer dubbed “The Sandman”. Nathan killed The Sandman (Iggy Pop) years ago, on Christmas Eve, after he witnessed the murder of his mother…until he sees the beautiful woman who lives in the apartment across the way dying at the hands of that same masked killer. This brutal murder plunges Nathan into an odyssey into the night country of his past, his dreams…and the buried secrets of The Sandman. Christmas is coming, and so is The Sandman.
No, you did not read that wrong - Iggy Pop is going to play the killer, which is a stroke of genius casting, in my opinion.
Argento is working with his longtime composer, Claudio Simonetti, for the score, and Scott Weiland has composed the title song for the film, "Way She Moves." Yes, rock legend Scott Weiland, formerly of Stone Temple Pilots, Velvet Revolver, and now The Wildabouts. There's basically nothing about this project that isn't solid.
There's just one catch, however - Argento needs your help to make it happen. This time, he's trying something even he has never done before: Crowdfunding. Regardless of how you feel about platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo, it's pretty cool that at 74 years of age, the legendary filmmaker is jumping into the social media game.
If you want to donate and know you helped become part of making a freakin' Dario Argento project come to life, you can go to the Indiegogo page HERE.
There's some pretty sweet swag if you donate, as well, including signed posters from the man himself, Blu-ray/DVDs, subscription to Fandor, a thank you credit in the film, first 10 pages of the script, soundtrack, and more. SO much more. Really, really cool stuff, so again, GO HERE and check it out. If you're a horror fan, this is your mother lode.
Will you donate to The Sandman's Indiegogo project?
