This week, Marvel released an extended trailer for the upcoming blockbuster: [The Avengers: Age Of Ultron](movie:293035). The new version on the first trailer certainly lived up to the adjective "extended," as the preview provided several additional scenes to the upcoming trailer. Unfortunately, there was not enough to give a full trailer analysis. However, while all the new scenes were great to see, there was one that stood out from the rest. In the preview, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) is given footage that features none other then Loki's scepter. Loki's primary weapon in The Avengers was lost to the Asgardian during the battle of New York. However (SPOILER), at the end of [Captain America: The Winter Soldier](movie:254973), we find out that Hydra has the scepter in their possession. Now we know for a fact that Loki's scepter is making a return without its master. So the question is: How will this item play a role in Age of Ultron?
If you recall in The Avengers, Loki's scepter has many powers. The scepter had the ability to fire energy blasts, but perhaps its most elaborate technique was to brainwash anyone of Loki's choosing. By simply touching people with the scepter's tip, Loki could bring anyone into his persuasion (well, everyone but Tony Stark). Perhaps brainwashing is the very reason why Hydra has the scepter. That could work the film goes in the direction of Hydra controlling Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. That could be interesting way to explain their characters' evil intentions and using the scepter in this manner would be an intriguing call back the 2012 film. Then again, these directions all depend on how much we see the scepter.
For all we know, that shot of the scepter may be the only time it appears in the film. Then again, maybe the scepter does have a big role to play in Age of Ultron. Perhaps Ultron himself could use this item for his plans of world conquest. Another way to look at this is that maybe the scepter has a bigger role to play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A theory that has been thrown my way is that Loki's Scepter is in fact an Infinity Stone. If the scepter is indeed one of the six ancient artifacts, that may leave to some questions like why Thanos would give Loki the staff if it was a infinity stone? Yet that direction could make for a great dynamic for both Age of Ultron and the what is to come in the future of the MCU. It all depends how the filmmakers handle the significance of Loki's staff.
There are many mysteries surrounding Age of Ultron and this scepter is no exception. It is possible that the item will just appear for a scene or it could be teased for another film. It is even possible that Loki could sneak to Midgard to retrieve his weapon (after all, he will be making an appearance in the movie). It is anyone guess, but if anything can be taken away from this detail, it may be safe to say that this scepter will have some kind of importance in the 2015 film.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theaters on May 1, 2015.
What role do you see the scepter playing?
