Now, I love Playmobil as much as the next guy (who spent a whole lot of his childhood playing with his Playmobil pirate ship and fort), but this news still took me completely by surprise: Playmobil, the classic German toys with extremely funny-shaped heads, are coming to the big screen.

That's right, The Playmobil Movie is on its way to the big screen, with ON Entertainment, Wild Bunch and Pathe having collectively put up $80 million to make the legendary toy range into a Lego Movie-style cinematic adventure.

Bob Persichetti ( of Monsters vs. Aliens, Shrek 2 and Puss in Boots fame) is set to take the helm, with the movie expected to hit cinemas in 2017.

The thing is, though - Lego already had a huge range of branded lines to add into their movie, which is why we got to see Lego Batman, Gandalf and The Millenium Falcon in The Lego Movie. Now, the success of that movie arguably had far more to do with its exceptional balancing of comedy, action and adventure, along with just the right amount of tongue pressed firmly into cheek, but without any of the pop culture additions, can The Playmobil Movie really match it?

Well, here's hoping they can - the toys were awesome, after all (if admittedly second best to Lego) - and that come 2017 we're all enjoying the exciting adventures of...

PLAYMOBIL PIRATES

THE PLAYMOBIL WILD WEST

and, of course, PLAYMOBIL MEDIEVAL FANTASY LAND

No. Wait, The Lego Movie totally already did all of those...

Damnit, Lego (and your consistent awesomeness)!
