Okay, its 2016 and Warner Brothers/DC Entertainment is coming with two feature films as the beginning of a big movie blitz that is expected to build a DC Movie Universe loaded with a plethora of DC Comics characters. That's good, but depending on strategy, is Suicide Squad a good way to kick the first year off? Lets think about it a moment. After a Suicide Squad, movie then what?
The other movie planned for 2016 is Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice. The title says it all. This is the intro to Justice League and we will get our first look at Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and probably the Flash together on screen and ready to carry over into Justice League Part One. We think we know that the villain for that movie is most likely Darkseid, but we don't know that for sure and that poses the question, what is left for Justice League Part Two if it really is Darkseid in Part One?
Assuming that the Justice League tackles Darkseid after they team up at the end of Dawn Of Justice what do they do in Part Two. Is that going to be a continuation of Part One or will they move on to something else, as The Avengers are doing in Age Of Ultron? It seems to me that if you have a team of Super Villains, like the Suicide Squad for instance, you want to line up a huge fight with a playbill that reads so and so VERSUS so and so. If Parts One and Two are connected and its a two part battle with Darkseid, and it could be, then we can forget I'm thinking a team versus team battle.
If the two Justice League are not a linked story with the same villain, however, then am I wrong in thinking it works better if we fight Darkseid in Part Two and warm up by taking on the Suicide Squad? For Justice League to be the kind of hit Avengers and Guardians of The Galaxy have been, that first movie has to be EPIC. Would it be with Darkseid as the villain, undoubtedly, but can we hang onto the cast of the Suicide Squad long enough to get to Justice League Part Two, and will that be as good after bypassing the top contenders and going after the champ the first time out? Can Suicide Squad offer the kind of confrontation that will leave movie goers begging for more?
We have names of characters (rumour for the most part) and we have names of actors to play parts (mostly rumour) and that is a very big part of making a confrontation with the Justice League work. Thus far we have had The Joker and Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Lex Luthor, Rick Flagg, Captain Boomerang, Blockbuster, and Bronze Tiger floating around with a few others suggested as the members of the Squad. Blockbuster and Bronze Tiger are probably not happening but the other six are what we think we know at this point to be confirmed or close enough to call.
The actors we have to go with those characters at this point are Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Jai Courtney, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie and Jesse Eisenberg. Three are confirmed and three are in talks with Warner Brothers, with two other names getting attention, Jon Bernthal and Cara Delwinge. If those names all end up on a confirmed list, that is eight villains against six confirmed heroes. But looking at the characters being cast does it look like an epic battle? I'm thinking . . . NO! Unless Deadshot has kryptonite bullets, it could as easily be a 3 or 2 on 8 back alley brawl that the Suicide Squad would be a bazillion to one underdog in if Vegas calls it. The Justice League comes out with three heavy hitters, Suicide Squad comes out with a bunch of non-super-powered beings and not even the Joker is laughing.
Right now I like the idea of a battle between the League and the Suicide Squad, but whether it happens before or after Darkseid, the lineup needs some help. And the first move I'm making if its my call is cut Rick Flagg and go with a real heavy hitter, and with Tom Hardy we have an actor who has already played that kind of part and a part like that has already been kicked around, Blockbuster.
This is a guy who has some power and gives as the slugfest situation in a match-up with Aquaman, Wonder Woman or Superman. He has superhuman strength, does not wear out easily and has a high resistance to physical and energy attacks while Rick Flagg is your basic human punching bag in a fight with super powered beings. Another possibility for a real part Tom Hardy could play, Solomon Grundy.
Next, we have two actors rumoured but not attached to characters names yet so we have the possibility for a male and a female villain if Bernthal and Delevinge are signed to contracts.
For an a female villain how about Cheetah? She is a lot deadlier than the very mental Harley Quinn and provides a greater threat to someone with the kind of powers someone like Wonder Woman has.
Another possibility is Nightshade, who has been a member of the Suicide Squad in the past has is an even greater threat than Cheetah.
Now, who do I have Jon Bernthal playing, assuming he signs on for the project? How about Doctor Light. He too has been a member of the Suicide Squad, and in the past he has been a viable threat to the Justice League all by himself. His ability to use light as a weapon makes him a formidable foe, and if not him them perhaps we go with another heavy hitter, King Shark who can go toe to toe, again with Wonder Woman, Aquaman or even Superman.
With Rick Flagg out my Squad is made up of Lex Luthor, Joker, Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, , Blockbuster, Dr. Light OR King Shark and Cheetah OR Nightshade. Casting for the parts; I'm good with the eight names already being talked about unless we look at the Suicide Squad as a collection of lifers in prison who could be old when they get out and battle the Justice League in which case I go with Kurt Russell as Captain Boomerang and Michael Keaton as Deadshot and work down from there.
As for when the meeting takes place I am inclined to lead off in Dawn of Justice with Brainiac at the end, with him bringing Darkseid into the picture in Justice League Part One and then Brainiac returning in Justice League Two, forging an alliance with Lex Luthor and Luthor leading the Suicide Squad away from their affiliation with Amanda Waller and the government and going their own way and being pawns to some degree for Brainiac in a plot to wipe out the Justice League. Yeah, I know I started out with the idea we take the Suicide Squad first and Darkseid after but my thoughts on a few additions to the Suicide Squad makes them a viable force to do battle with, and on top of that you have the keenest criminal mind behind them so I like what I walked myself into here.
Well, there you have it, my thoughts on who the Suicide Squad should be and what they should do for a hobby after they win their reduced prison sentences. Let me know what you think in the comments and hopefully, you'll cast a vote in the poll.
DISCLAIMER: It is now a day after I published this article and the sources of some of my information have come under fire because of a question of credibility. You always want to be accurate with what you write or say. I used three different sources to confirm that two of the rumored actors for Suicide Squad were part of the cast under contract, and while I trusted what I read, the number of sources and the fact that none of them were Warner Brothers or DC Comics makes it questionable and I will accept that and roll with it. Were my sources of information reliable, maybe, maybe not. Was it a mistake to go with the information I had, maybe, maybe not and perhaps I should have not made the claim at this time. My apologies!
