I'm a 21 year old guy from Norway, and in this article I'm gonna explain to all of you moviepiloters how MARVEL movies have defined me as a person growing up in the middle of the northern hemisphere.

The thing is that there was a time in my youth when I didn't know squat about MARVEL comics nor the MCU. As a kid I remember watching the Spider-Man series on Cartoon Network and things of that nature, but I never really let it get my full and upmost attention until I was about 16 years old. You see, comic books based on MARVEL superheroes are a rare and estranged concept here in Norway. When you visit our beloved grocery stores you'll find a shelf or two by the counter which are dedicated mostly to magazines about boats, cars, mens health, womens health, newspapers, gossip mags, pocket books and the common cartoon strips created by Norwegian authors. The comic book that takes the 1st place when it comes to sales here in the far north is Donald Duck.. yeah you heard me.. Donald Duck.. Kids here do love Disney's all time favourite Duck, Donald.. but what strikes me as funny is that they have no clue who Thor is.. The MARVEL hero who is actually a Norwegian viking God.. he is nowhere to be found on our poor comic book shelves.. and I find that a bit sad.

Where was I? Yes.. 16 year old in Norway..

Growing up in foster care I've learned that life has a habit of punching you in the face from time to time.. but we keep our spirits up.. because, yeah.. that's what vikings do! With my desk drawer filled up with Donald Duck comics I lacked a fulfillness in my mind.. I craved something that could put my mind at ease with the raging emoitions that comes with being a teenager in an unstable environment.. A world that I could just dive into and enjoy with all my heart and soul.. and then this happend..

Bryan Singer's X-Men movie:

X-men (2000)
X-men (2000)

Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movie:

Spider-Man (2002)
Spider-Man (2002)

Tim Story's Fantastic Four movie:

Fantastic Four (2005)
Fantastic Four (2005)

Yup.. there you have it.. These movies literally blew my mind away! These characters were so mesmerizing and compelling.. Their storylines were so well written and so highly executed! They spoke to me in a way that Donald Duck or any other character could never do! Keep in mind that this was my first encounter with these characters (Aside from Spidey.. but you get my point).. I'm aware today that some of these instalments didn't quite live up to the hype, but from my vantage point back then.. these movies were perfect in every way.. and they still are! They gave me something I longed for in my life.. a peek into the world of superheroes.. I stand corrected.. a peek into the world of MARVEL superheroes! A world where everything was possible and nothing was impossible. After whatching these flicks I used to spend hours reseraching origin stories, comparing powers and investigate easter eggs.. and I finally caught up on the MARVEL freight train of awesome and I have been hooked ever since! Now at the age of 21 I find myself in the midst of the golden age of superhero movies and I couldn't be more thankful and excited.

MARVEL created these universes for kids like me.. Kids that are unsure of themselves, kids that are shy and not quite sure how to handle all the crap this world throws in your face! These movies gave me a place I could go to when things got a little bumpy. These films and these characters gave me the courage to think for myself and pave my own way! And here comes the punchline: They DEFINE me! And yes.. they continue to define me to this day.. All these movies are perfectly and proudly placed in perfect order upon my movie shelf.. I own each and every one of them and I've watched them hundreds and hundreds of times out of respect and pure pleasure.. I want to thank MARVEL for creating these awesome works of art bringing a little norwegian boy a sense of purpose and meaning in what used to be an unstable and turbulent life.. Thank you for showing me truly what the word awesomeness really means!

And to wrap this up.. yes.. I have a Wolverine tattoo to prove my fandom! Because Wolverine is pure freakin' badassery and my all time fav MARVEL character!

Thank you for reading!
