Near San Marcos, Texas, over 50 naked, dead human bodies lie in a 16-acre field. This is the Freeman Ranch, and it's a Body Farm.

This may seem like some horrible image from a horror movie - actually, I'm thinking of one specific scene from the last season of Hannibal - but the reason this is happening is helping to solve the worst kind of crimes.

WARNING: these images are NOT for the squeamish.

The Freeman Ranch is part of a scientific study

The Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State University is studying the stages of human decomposition. There are four other body farms also currently in operation in the US.

All of the bodies are donated for research

Viewing the combined effects of the elements, insect life and natural rotting is vital for scientists to help identify remains, whether from exposure, crime or natural causes.

Every stage of composition is on display

From fresh corpses to the bloated, maggot-infested, putrefied, and the driest skeletons, all stages of decay are studied and examined.
